Peyronie’s Disease

During erection, it is common that the penis can be slightly bent to the left or right. If you notice a significant curve in your penis, and this causes difficulty and pain during intercourse, you are advised to speak to your doctor.

What causes Peyronie’s Disease?

The underlying cause of Peyronie’s Disease is not yet fully understood. It is postulated that the condition can occur after an injury to the penis when erect, but most men with Peyronie’s Disease have never suffered a significant injury to the penis. Peyronie’s Disease can run in the family.

What are the Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease?

• A palpable thickened area or a hardened lump (plaque) over the shaft of the penis

What are the Treatment Options for Peyronie’s Disease?

In mild cases where men do not encounter pain or sexual dysfunction, they do not need treatment. The condition may improve over time by itself over a period of 12 months.

In those more serious cases where men encounter sexual dysfunctional and psychological negative impact, one should seek medical treatment.

Non-surgical Treatment

Extracorporal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

This treatment delivers low intensity targeted soundwaves at the plaques via an ultrasound machine. The soundwaves will break up the thickened skin which are made of fibrous tissues, hence reversing the bending and restoring the original shape of penis.

InjectionsSteroid injections and Botox injections may have some role in reducing the scar tissue that causes the bending of the penis. However, these methods may be associated with bleeding risks and fracture of penis.

Surgical Treatment

In severe cases, surgery might be the only way to improve the outcome. One may require surgical removal of the plaque a skin or vein graft so as to straighten the penis. The surgery may also involve removing areas of the penis opposite the plaque areas to cancel out the bend, or insertion of an implant device to straighten the penis.

Unfortunately, even despite successful treatment, there is a chance of Peyronie’s Disease recurring. Thankfully, Peyronie’s Disease does not cause infertility and does not lead to penile cancer.
