In a desperate survival situation, many people have resorted to drinking their urine. That is ok up to a point. As your dehydration increases, your urine will become increasingly concentrated (dark and even viscous.) It's best to drink urine early in your survival situation since it will be less concentrated and consequently less toxic. That way you are conserving what water you do have longer. Of course, most people will completely exhaust their water supply before they resort to drinking urine. However, drinking highly concentrated urine is probably worse than not drinking it at all. Also, urine is actually sterile inside your bladder but not as it flows through your urethra. These filters very effectively remove PARTICLE contaminants, such as bacteria, protozoans, even cryptosporidium, the smallest known organism to infect humans. However, these filters can not and will not remove DISSOLVED contaminants, such as salt or urea/uric acid or even chlorine. These chemicals are dissolved in the water, which means their molecules come apart and mix in with the water molecules. They are therefore too small to be trapped by the submicron filter, and can pass through it as easily as the water does. Therefore, I would strongly advise that if you suspect your water supply has been contaminated by a chemical that may have dissolved in it, do not drink it, even using this filter. Hope this helps. see less I do not have this product, but I have experience with other submicron water filters. I'm a truck driver and we usually pee into large mouth Gatorade or soda bottles to keep on trucking. In the dark, sleepy, whatever don't judge... I reached over and took a swig of my urine. FYI no big deal, just as you would imagine a warm food like taste similar to chicken broth. Cheers. No I didn't make it a habit. Matt F. · March 3, 2020 615 people found this helpful. Do you? | Report If you are at the point where you have to drink your pee, does taste really matter? mrvman · October 23, 2014 101 people found this helpful. Do you? | Report The regular LifeStraw doesn't have a carbon filter (to improve taste) and isn't strong enough to keep out viruses, so be careful whose pee you drink. ;) The Purple Pen · November 9, 2016 51 people found this helpful. Do you? | Report The straw will not filter out any ions such as salt, chlorine or calcium. These are such small atomic substances that there is no way to adequately filter them in this method. Most of the time when they need to filter out ions they need to bond them to a larger substrate and filter out the substrate. Of course, that is not the purpose of this design.
