You can change the layout of Safari bars, buttons, and bookmarks to suit your browsing style.

Open Safari for me

Use the Favorites bar

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Choose View > Show Favorites Bar.

Show the status bar

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Choose View > Show Status Bar.

When you hold the pointer over a link, the status bar at the bottom of the Safari window shows the link’s full address.

Customize the toolbar

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Choose View > Customize Toolbar.

  3. Do any of the following:

    • Change the items in the toolbar: Add, remove, and rearrange toolbar items by dragging them. For example, you can add a Privacy Report button to see who was blocked from tracking you on the current webpage.

    • Remove a toolbar item: Press and hold the Command key, then drag the item out of the toolbar.

  4. Click Done.

Tip: You can quickly rearrange toolbar buttons directly on the toolbar. Press and hold the Command key, then drag buttons right or left. This shortcut doesn’t work for the Back/Forward, Sidebar, Home, History, or Downloads buttons, or the Smart Search field.

If you see angle brackets at the right end of the toolbar, it means the window is too small to show all of the toolbar items. Enlarge the window or click the brackets to see the rest of the items.

While in full-screen view, choose View > Always Show Toolbar in Full Screen.

Customize the tab bar

  1. Go to the Safari app on your Mac.

  2. Choose Safari > Settings, then click Tabs.

  3. Do any of the following:

    • Use the active webpage as a background: Choose “Show color in tab bar.”

    • Include website titles even when many tabs are shown: Choose “Always show website titles in tabs.”

See Change Tabs settings.

To customize Safari even more, choose Safari > Settings, then change options.
