Dass or das?

Dass (that) is a conjunction, which means it connects two sentences. It usually comes directly after a verb.

Ich hoffe, dass du gesund bist.

I hope that you are healthy.

Wir denken, dass Tim bald da ist.

We think that Tim will be here soon.

Das refers to a noun, either:

  • as a definite article meaning “the”

das Hotel, das Bier, das Leben

the hotel, the beer, the life

  • or as a relative pronoun meaning “which, who” Relativpronomen

Anna hat das Hotel geerbt. Das Hotel ist alt. → Das Hotel, das Anna geerbt hat, ist alt.

Anna inherited the hotel. The hotel is old. → The hotel which Anna inherited is old.

Ich habe ein Auto. Das Auto ist neu. → Das Auto, das ich habe, ist neu.

I have a car. The car is new. → The car which I have is new.
