Dass or das?

Dass (that) is a conjunction, which means it connects two sentences. It usually comes directly after a verb.

Ich hoffe, dass du gesund bist.

I hope that you are healthy.

Wir denken, dass Tim bald da ist.

We think that Tim will be here soon.

Das refers to a noun, either:

  • as a definite article meaning “the”

das Hotel, das Bier, das Leben

the hotel, the beer, the life

  • or as a relative pronoun meaning “which, who” Relativpronomen

Anna hat das Hotel geerbt. Das Hotel ist alt. Das Hotel, das Anna geerbt hat, ist alt.

Anna inherited the hotel. The hotel is old. → The hotel which Anna inherited is old.

Ich habe ein Auto. Das Auto ist neu. Das Auto, das ich habe, ist neu.

I have a car. The car is new. → The car which I have is new.
