Luckily, it seems like it finally has a home in GEEKTOYS that are not only committed to faithfully adapting the story, but enhancing it where necessary. Finally, people who haven’t read the LN can find out why this series is so loved. Seasons 1-3 of Date a Live were riddled with a slew of quality issues. From pacing and cut content, to subpar animation and art, major quality of life improvements were needed. While on the surface DAL may seem like a generic harem romcom, there’s actually ... a pretty interesting story beneath the surface that a lot of people did not get to experience properly because of how poor the previous adaptations were. After the job that Geektoys did on Date a Bullet, the Kurumi based spin-off, I was cautiously optimistic they’d bring that same level of dedication and care to season 4 and they absolutely did. For me the biggest and most noticeable improvement over previous seasons and my largest source of enjoyment was the pacing. The two new girls that get introduced in this season both got adequate screen time and development during their arcs. It really felt like the staff wanted you to accept these girls as unique members of the cast and actually give them unique personalities. In previous seasons, you’d get a harem member introduced for an episode or 2 and then they’d fade into obscurity. 4-5 episodes for the new girls this time around was really a breath of fresh air. I will never understand the need to rush things like we often see in this medium. I think the overall story benefitted from the pacing improvement too. I actually was able to get invested in and care about the arc(s) this season. It’s hard to do that when things are just brushed over like in seasons 1-3. The artstyle is probably going to be the biggest change people notice at a glance. For me, I loved it. I think the colours in this season are very bright and attractive, the character designs are IMO much better than seasons 1-3 and although there was some Tohka Boob nerfage, I am largely fine with the changes. I think it feels like DAL for a modern audience. The bottom line is if you hate DAL, season 4 isn’t going to make you like it. While there are massive quality improvements, it’s unlikely to be enough to drawback people who dropped the series years ago. It’s still Date a Live after-all. This feels like a treat for those of us who stuck it out. The dedicated fans who were looking forward to Kurumi refrain and peak DAL. We sat thru the awful animation and rushed story to be rewarded with this gem. As someone who loves DAL and these characters, that’s all I can ask for. Hopefully season 5 continues the trend. DAL S4 gets 9 dates out of 10. Reviewer’s Rating: 9 What did you think of this review? This is one of those anime that I see as one of my guilty pleasures, as I watch it I know how absurd it can actually be but generally I just kind of embrace it and enjoy the show regardless. This is a male power fantasy, Our main character is perfect in almost everyway, the girls tits will always be almost out at all times and there will be panty shots. ************************************************************************************************************ STORY [4/10] There ... is nothing special or innovative about this story. The story can be boiled down to, see sexy girl, date sexy girl, seal sexy girls extreme powers with a kiss and then make her a part of your Waifu harem. Some people will love it and some people will hate it but this definitely isn't some fantastic story , It is a lot of tropes put together with some good points that kept me watching it. ART[7/10] The animation and CGI is much improved this season. There are some really well done and beautiful scenes and that cannot be denied. The female characters are very well drawn and animated and are all a pleasure to look at throughout the show. What I noticed is that it seams season 4 received a bit more money and that definitely seemed to go into the animation, CGI and art style. SOUND [6/10] A well done soundtrack that does its intended job. No soundtracks feel out of place and I enjoyed the openings and closings and listened to them on most episodes. My fiancé also really enjoyed them as I could always catch her bobbing her head and dancing a little to them. There are some song choices that I believe could have been better but overall its not a bad attempt. CHARACTER [5/10] For me the characters in season 4 of date a live can be boiled down to two words; likeable and shallow. The Main character is your average harem/Ecchi MC, hes altruistic to his detriment and never would even consider not throwing his life away for any of his Waifus. In truth that is really most of his character. To move on to the girls, they are beautiful to look at but really only exist as a plot device to push the main character along the story and assist him when needed. There isnt a whole lot of character building and there are a lot of new female characters added quickly but that is really what I see this show as, Waifu Collector 2.0. Saying all that I still liked the characters enough regardless of their shortcomings ENJOYMENT [7/10] As I said this is one of my guilty pleasure shows and I really enjoyed the season, that I cannot lie about. I also cannot say that the story is AMAZING or that the character development is a masterpiece. The truth is if you are watching this show you should know what it is. It is a male power fantasy / Waifu collector sim, there is nothing wrong with enjoying shows like that but it is important to understand It for what it is. That being said.... I still love this show but I also understand it is nowhere near a masterpiece. OVERALL [5/10] For me most everything in this anime is just passable, Its not gonna bring fans from any other Genres as the fan service and Male power fantasy is strong. all in all for me this is your average Ecchi/Harem w/ fanservice. It doesn't innovate or really do anything that interesting other than maybe the dating premise but That is really it. Know what your getting into when you watch this and just enjoy it for what it is. So this is what I felt after watching 9 episodes:- 1)The new studio didn't take the project seriously. 2) The didn't gather enough funds or gathered it but decided to not use it. 3) The animators are not talented enough to recreate the original more detailed character designs. ... 4) The actions scenes are horrible , they cut too many corners using CGI. 5) The story is too fast paced. 6) The only thing i feel from this is that the studio does not have enough funding (or cheap), lazy, don't take anything seriously and only took on this project because of the series popularity and the money they would gain. 7)The only thing redeeming about it is the sound quality nothing else. I am a big fan of the series and have re-watched it a few times and even read the Light Novel and wanted to see how it would get adapted this time, but this season is just horrible. I don't know how many will read this or how many will agree with it but to me it was a huge disappointment. for those who have watched the first 3 seasons and are planning to watch the fourth hope this review helps.
