Deadlifts are an great exercise to add to your weekly exercise routine, as doing so can have a number of major benefits.
This exercise works multiple muscle groups at the same time, which allows you to get stronger and fitter in less time, and it is also a functional exercise which allows you to carry out tasks in your everyday life.
How to perform a deadlift
Firstly, stand behind the barbell with your feet in line with your hips, and make sure to bend your knees slightly.
Keep your back flat and grip the barbell with both hands, with your hands placed slightly wider than your knees.
Keep your shoulders pressed down and slightly rotate your elbows internally so that your shoulder blades are engaged, in order that you are using your back and shoulders to help lift the weight.
Keeping your core tight, push through your heels and lift the weight, straightening your knees first, keeping your back flat and then proceeding to reverse the hinge at your hip to stand up the ret of the way.
Pause at the top, and ensure that your legs are straight and your pelvis is directly under you shoulders, with no arch in the lower back.
How many deadlifts should you do?
The number of deadlifts that you should do depends on the amount of weight that you are using.
If you are just starting out with your deadlifts, perform five to eight deadlifts per set, working your way up from three to five sets, and make sure to use a lower weight.
If you are at an advanced fitness level, perform one to six deadlifts per set, working you way up from three to five sets, using a heavier weight and resting in between each set.
What muscles do deadlifts work?
Deadlifts train multiple muscle groups including the hamstrings, glutes, back, hips, core and trapezius, which is a key reason why it is such an effective exercise.
