A lot of people have a definition of the word 'griefing' in minecraft. Mine is: Purposely destroying something someone else made. Some people might call it funny. Some people might call it fun. Some people think it's upsetting. Some call it dumb What's your definition? Rollback Post to Revision RollBack When I'm sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. I think a good one is: A player on a Multiplayer server, who uses tools, flint and steel, buckets of water and lava, and TNT to destroy player-made structures and generally cause chaos. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Mine is: Unwanted modification of a minecraft structure to cause annoyance or anger. Also related to the definition of greifing: I went on a server and started to play. When I got bored, I mined a protected block, as most players do, beacause's protected and will not bother anyne. (it's a habit) All of a sudden a mod appeared and asked why I was destroying the block. Ovbiously I was annoyed and we had an argument wheter or not what I did was "attempted greifing". I argued that I didn't attempt anything and that the rules board at the server spawn did not state that destroying protected zones is greifing, as it does nothing. I was kicked and told to "lose the attitude". Moral of the story: A server mod's definition of greifing sucks. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack If you want a response, quote me. Griefing: PvP in a situation where PvP/that type of PvP is against the rules of the server. Usually. I believe that griefing is destroying, stealing, or permanently ruining someone's stuff. However, there are a lot of mean or annoying things you can do that aren't griefing. Like filling someone's house with ice. Or planting huge numbers of trees on his roof. If you've seen the video "the vining" then that's on the border of griefing because clearing it up must have taken ages. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

A ******* ********. Seriously though, a griefer is a thing (doesn't even deserve to be called a person) who intentionally messes with people by doing things like destroying your creations, building offensive structures, etc AND they do it just to annoy/irritate you! I don't hate griefers, but I don't love them either. To me they make the game much more challenging, for example, a four man griefer squad was sent by a operator (who hated me for a reason, but never kicked or permaban me) to my house, they all wore diamond gear, and armed with TNT, I was able to throw slowness potions at them and lead them to a hidden lava trap. Griefers: Hostile players that make the game more challenging. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

To put it casually, Griefing is causing disturbances to get attention or simply entertainment. To put it professionally, Griefing, coming from the term 'Grief', is causing troubles and disturbances to a certain someone or a location. Grief can range from slight to severe and can happen in both games and real life. MC isn't the only place where you see grief. Grief has a somewhat similar meaning to Vandalism however, to a softer extend. Griefing doesn't usually involved destroying furnitures. Most of them is usually scribbling on walls or playing pranks on people. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

My problem is that people mix the definition of greifing and trolling up. Some people call sneaking into someone's house, turning a stack of diamonds into hoes, and putting them back into the chests "trolling", which is utterly wrong. You might as well have thrown those diamonds in lava. Trolling would be taking a stack of your own diamonds, turning them into hoes, putting them in someone's diamond chest, and relocating their diamonds to a different chest that is relatively easy to find if they start looking, but won't be seen at first glance. Sure, it might freak them out and cost them a bit of time, but that's unavoidable with any trolling. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

Griefing is near-equivalent to trolling. Trolling and griefing only define the first example, whereas the second example is not trolling nor greifing, but rather a harmless prank which takes up a few diamonds.

Make the game more challenging? How is TNTing all your chests (and all the buildings that you worked hard on) into oblivion while you are offline 'more challenging'. Personally I think being reset to the punch-tree beginning of the game after spending long, hard hours on collecting diamonds is something I could do without. Personally, I find the example of griefers you gave to be a sort of 'getting-griefed' ideal. The most recent grief that happened to me was someone blew up my house (and all my chests), destroying items both sentimental and valuble. Another grief was when I built a small cave-home full of valuble chests. The griefer blew the stuff up, which included diamonds I needed to participate in the server's Dragon Fight. I became the server's new panhandler. I had no chance to set up have a 'little war', as if griefers were an intended challenge in the game. Instead, they log on when I am offline, only for me to discover the devastaton the next day. Griefing is the action of ruining someone's building in any way, such as stealing stuff, breaking blocks, placing blocks, anything to ruin it. I wouldn't say it would be without permission because then you have griefing servers where you're allowed to ruin people's buildings. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack
