Types of Dentures in Singapore

Dentures are available in many types, all of which can be classified into 3 main categories: removable, permanent, and temporary.

Conventional: Removable Dentures

Lasts for: 3 5 years

Conventional dentures are custom-made artificial teeth and gums designed to fit comfortably in a patient’s mouth. Available in full or partial sets, they accommodate varying degrees of tooth loss. These removable dentures are typically crafted from acrylic or porcelain and are supported by an acrylic or metal base.

ProsCons
  • Rather affordable
  • Options for patients missing a few or all teeth
  • Can last for some time if well-maintained
  • May break if dropped
  • Not suitable for those with metal allergy
  • Takes time to fabricate
  • Takes time to get used to
  • May experience temporary speech problems
  • Food particles may get trapped while eating
  • Full Dentures

Full dentures, also known as complete dentures, include both upper and lower sets and are ideal for individuals who have lost all of their teeth.

They fit snugly over the gum tissue, with suction helping to keep them securely in place during speaking and chewing.

    Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are suitable for patients who are missing only some of their teeth. They are designed to fill any gaps in your smile, whether upper, lower, or both.

Like full dentures, partials enhance your confidence and can be removed as needed.

    Flexible Dentures

    Lasts for: 5 – 8 years

Flexible dentures, as the name suggests, is a type of partial denture that is softer and more comfortable. This is achieved by using a nylon (or other thin thermoplastics) material as compared to acrylic used in regular dentures which is thicker and stiffer.

    ProsCons
  • Softer, more comfortable and more natural than conventional dentures
  • Faster to fabricate
  • Less likely to cause allergic reactions as they do not contain metal
  • Unlikely to break as easily when dropped
  • More expensive
  • Bite strength not as high
  • Can be prone to bacteria buildup
  • Requires replacement once broken
  • Permanent: Implant-supported / Snap on Dentures

    Lasts for: 10 15 years

Implant-supported dentures (also known as snap on dentures) are fitted permanently through surgery. For this, a few dental implants are used to hold the denture in place.

The entire process can take up to 6 months as the bone needs time to grow around the implants before they become securely fitted. This is a great option for those who have difficulty adapting to conventional dentures.

    ProsCons
  • More stable than conventional dentures, easier to adapt to
  • May be more effective at hiding lost gum tissue
  • May help retain bone mass
  • More expensive than regular implants
  • Comes with the risks of surgery
  • Not suitable for those with metal allergy
  • Temporary: Immediate Dentures

To be worn for: Maximum 2 3 months

Immediate dentures are temporary solutions provided to patients who have just undergone tooth extraction, serving as placeholders while waiting for their conventional or permanent dentures. These dentures help protect the gum tissue during the healing process. Since they are not custom-fitted, they may not fit as snugly as permanent dentures.

Process of Getting Dentures at i.Dental Singapore

If you need to get dentures done, here is an overview of the process from start to finish at i.Dental.

    • Step 1: Consultation

The first step is to book a consultation with our dentist. During the appointment, we will assess your oral health and suitability for dentures.

We will alert you of any oral health concerns and advise on how to treat or work around them.

    • Step 2: Impressions are Taken

If you are a suitable candidate for dentures, we proceed by taking impressions of your teeth and gums. This step may involve up to two sets of impressions, each session lasting about 30 minutes, to ensure a precise and tailored fit for your dentures.

    • Step 3: Choose Type and Materials

You will then choose from various types and materials for your dentures, based on your lifestyle and preferences. Once selected, the fabrication of the dentures will take approximately 1 to 5 weeks.

    • Step 4: Fitting of Dentures

When your dentures are ready, we will invite you back for a fitting session. During this appointment, you will try on the dentures to ensure they fit well and feel comfortable. Any necessary adjustments will be made during this session or in subsequent appointments to guarantee a perfect fit.

Best Practices when Getting Used to Dentures

It is normal to feel strange when you first wear your dentures. To help you get used to it, here are some do’s and don’ts to adhere to, so you can easily adapt within a few weeks.

    Do’sDon’ts
  • Take soft foods or foods that have been broken down into smaller pieces
  • Use both sides of your mouth when chewing to balance the pressure placed on the dentures
  • Care for your dentures using the best practices in the next section
  • If the dentures feel slightly loose, avoid biting down to keep it in place — this may damage the dentures or your teeth
  • Avoid wearing removable dentures 24/7
  • Avoid sticky and tough foods
  • How to Care for Your Dentures

Adopting these habits when caring for your dentures can help to maintain its quality longer and prolong its lifespan.

    • Rinse Dentures After Meals

After eating, remove your dentures and rinse them with water to remove any food debris or loose particles.

To prevent them from being damaged if you drop them, fill the sink with water or place a towel in it to cushion the impact.

    • Brush and Clean Dentures Daily

To prevent permanent stains and remove plaque, dentures need to be brushed every day using a soft-bristled toothbrush or a brush designed specifically for cleaning them.

Standard toothpaste should not be used because they are abrasive and can cause scratches. Instead, use dental cleaners like in denture soaking tablets, hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid.

    • Soak Dentures Overnight

Place your dentures in a mild denture-soaking solution or in the water when not worn; this prevents them from drying out and losing their shape.

Note that dentures with metal attachments might get tarnished if placed in a soaking solution. Consult your dentist about the best way to care for your specific denture.

    • Handle Your Dentures Carefully

Avoid placing your dentures in hot water as this may cause them to warp.

Avoid bending them or damaging the plastic or clasps while cleaning.

Bleach products or abrasive cleaning tools such as stiff toothbrushes should not be used as well.

    • Clean Your Mouth After Removing Dentures

Aside from taking care of your dentures, it is important to keep up with good oral hygiene habits.

After removing your dentures, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your natural teeth and clean your tongue, cheeks and palate. Any leftover denture adhesive should be removed too.

    • Schedule Regular Appointments with Your Dentist

Visiting your dentist regularly allows you to have your dentures checked to ensure that it fits properly.

It also allows you to get them professionally cleaned and have your dentist check on your oral health.

    FAQs About Dentures

    FAQs

How long does it take to make dentures in Singapore?

Immediate partial dentures can be fabricated in about 1 to 2 weeks, while immediate full dentures will take longer. For conventional dentures, it will take about 1 to 5 weeks from the consultation to the time the dentures are issued to the patient.

    How long do dentures last?

Dentures last for about 3 to 5 years. During this period, your dentures may need to be replaced or relined due to wear and tear. Coupled with changing bone shape, your dentures may loosen or irritate your gums.

As such, annual visits to the dentist are recommended.

How long does it take to get used to my dentures?

New dentures may feel uncomfortable until you get used to them. Patients usually take about a few weeks to get accustomed. Until then, experiencing slight discomfort or minor soreness is normal.

If the pain or discomfort persists, contact your dentist to have them adjusted.

What happens if a tooth falls out of my dentures?

In such cases, patients have 2 choices:

    • Replace the lost tooth

Our dentists will take a mould of your tooth, retain your current dentures and send them to the lab to replace the lost tooth. During this period, you will not have any dentures for about 7 working days while the lost tooth is being fabricated.

    • Replace the entire denture

You can also consider replacing the entire denture. In this case, you can bring home your current dentures to wear while waiting for the new one to be fabricated.

What are the benefits of dentures?

    Dentures offer several advantages, including:

    • Eliminating issues caused by gaps: Dentures help resolve problems that arise from having gaps in your teeth, such as difficulties in speaking and eating.
    • Restoring function: They restore your ability to bite and chew properly, allowing for a more varied diet and better nutrition.
    • Enhancing appearance: Dentures improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile, which can boost your confidence and self-esteem.
    • Cost-effective solution: They provide an affordable way to replace missing teeth compared to other dental restoration options.
