Destiny 2: Getting Started
This section is intended for newer players. If you're already familiar with Destiny's core systems, jump to the 30th Anniversary Section of our hub page.
Destiny 2 is a complex game filled with dozens of activities, hundreds of weapons, and quite a few progression systems. If you finished the New Light tutorial and are still left confused about a whole manner of systems, fear not. We have guides that cover just about every aspect of Destiny. Let's make sure you start off on the right foot.
Choosing A Class
The first and arguably largest decision you make when booting up Destiny is choosing a class. You can choose between one of three classes: the agile Hunter, durable Titan, or the mystical Warlock. Ultimately, pick the class that looks the coolest to you. But if you're someone who wants to know the ins and outs of each class, check out our guide on how each class works in Destiny 2:
- Which Class Should I Play First?
Progression
One of the first things you should be doing as a New Light is upgrading your Guardian. Destiny 2 features a whole host of progression systems that will enhance the power of your Guardian. We suggest that you focus on your Power Level and unlock armor mods while starting out. Keep any purple-quality weapons you stumble across; they're much better than the blue-rarity guns that enemies frequently drop. Once you have a decent handle on shooting and looting, you can start looking into chasing good weapons, armor pieces, and much more.

Ritual Activities
Destiny 2 features three core game types: Vanguard Strikes (PvE missions), Crucible (PvP), and Gambit (PvEvP). As of writing, there's also a fourth PvE game type available to everyone called Dares of Eternity. These game types provide a solid Power influx while you're starting out and give you a taste of what Destiny's combat is all about. Eventually, you'll branch out into seasonal activities, dungeons, raids, and other pinnacle content. But for Guardians fresh out of the Cosmodrome, we recommend you start here. The guides below will give a rundown of how the progression systems for each game type work.
- (Strikes) How To Increase Your Vanguard Rank
- (Crucible) How To Increase Your Crucible Valor And Glory Ranks
- (Gambit) How To Increase Your Gambit Infamy Rank
- (Dares) How To Increase Your Strange Favor

| Free | Paid |

The six-player activity will be free for all players, but the dungeon and cosmetics are tied to the Anniversary Pack. To be clear, the 30th Anniversary Pack is not a season; Season of the Lost will continue to be the active season until The Witch Queen releases on February 22, 2021.
Is The 30th Anniversary Pack Tied To Season Of The Lost?
No. This is a separate DLC pack. Ownership of Season of the Lost does not grant ownership of this pack; you'll need to buy the 30th Anniversary Pack separately. It's unknown if the 30th Anniversary Pack's content will persist once Season of the Lost ends.
Can You Obtain Gjallarhorn Without The Anniversary Pack?
No. The 30th Anniversary Pack is required to access the Cosmodrome dungeon that drops Gjallarhorn.
