A Serious Analysis On Whether Griffith "Did Nothing Wrong" Now it is a popular meme to ironically state that Griffith from the manga Berserk "did nothing wrong", and simply stating this is enough to start an angry flame-war between Griffith-apologists and Griffith-critics. Yet in all seriousness, did he "do nothing wrong"? Today I will breakdown the chain of events and his actions to try to solve this age-old question..... MAJOR BERSERK SPOILERS!

Now the statement itself does not refer to his actions while starting his own mercenary group from the ground up, waging battles and wars in service to the highest-bidder, coldly eliminating his enemies, and taking reckless actions that would spell trouble for him and his troops. Rather, the statement refers mainly to what happened during the infamous Eclipse.... The Eclipse itself was an event so horrific and traumatic that even the most hardboiled of manga readers are left shaken at what happened, an event so abominable that the very creator of Berserk himself stated that he personally finds it nightmarish as Heck! Yet before we get to The Eclipse, let us go over the events that led to all of this...

The Road To The Eclipse Born into a cruel and brutal world where feudal lords fight constant bloody-wars, Griffith spent his childhood as an impoverished lowly street-urchin. From adolescence he dreamed of rising up from his status in life and rule his own kingdom. This dream only becoming stronger when he is given a strange red-necklace by a fortune-teller whom tells him that fate will lead him to become a grand-ruler. As a teenager he starts a mercenary group known as The Band Of The Hawk, travelling the land and selling their skills to whoever is hiring. Over his traveling he gathers an assortment of allies and followers whom are inspired by his sheer determination and charisma. Amongst them are Guts and Casca, our main protagonists and individuals whom he would grow closest to. Along the way he makes many sacrifices and sells his own body to a perverted lord in order to amass enough fortune to fund The Band Of The Hawk. Eventually his humble group becomes a full-blown miniature army unmatched by any, and he quickly achieves a string of victories for one of the larger kingdoms in the region. Jealousy grips several power-players in the king's royal-court when they see that this former commoner is quickly gaining the king's favor. Several many attempts are made on he and his mens' lives, and each time Griffith outwits their plots while eliminating the ring-leaders of each attempt. Despite all odds the Band Of The Hawk is able to win a final victory and end a regional war that had been ongoing for the past hundred-years. He and his men return as heroes by cheering masses, and the king himself officially grants them titles and declares that they shall officially be knighted as the White Phoenix Knights of the king's army. Secretly winning the heart of the princess and earning a pretigious seat in the royal-court, it seems that Griffith finnally is going to achieve his dream.

Unfortunately things quickly go down the tubes when Guts decides to leave the Band Of The Hawk and seek out his own path. Not taking this well at all, Griffith confronts Guts and duels him in an attempt to stop him from leaving. Some fans believe that Griffith could not stand the idea of his friend possibly leaving forever, while other fans say that he simply was a control-freak whom could not stand the idea of someone leaving his power without his permission. Whatever the case, Guts defeats him in the duel and leaves, causing Griffith to be emotionally wrecked. That night he tries to drown out his distress by sneaking into the chambers of the princess, where the two spend a night of passion. In a cruel turn of fate a maid gazes into her chambers to see them in the act, and alerts the king whom immediately has Griffith captured and brutally tortured. A royal decree is made and every member of the Band Of The Hawk has a steep bounty placed on their heads, sending them all into hiding. A year later Guts meets up with a regrouped Band Of The Hawk and learns of the fate of Griffith, soon a plan is made to rescue their former leader. With inside information from the princess, they fight their way into the prison where Griffith has been held. To their horror they discover that unspeakable acts of torture have been committed on Griffith, so much so that they hardly even recognize him. The royal-torturer cut out his tongue, branded him with hot-irons, carved up his once handsome face and locked him in an iron torture-mask, cut many of his tendons, and starved him into a skeleton of a man. Undeterred by this, they fight their way through the king's elite-troops and thralls as they flee to freedom. Ashamed at having his men seeing the hollow-husk that he became and unsure that he would ever return to his former strength or glory, Griffith gives up all hope.....

The Eclipse! Suddenly the strange charm he had since a child begins to transform into a screaming face, and the Band Of The Hawk is transported into a nightmarish landscape. Four nightmarish lords appear before them and declare themselves as The Godhand, deities of great power. They state that Griffith has been chosen to join them and that they will give him unimaginable power. One of the figures shows Griffith a vision, in it Griffith is once again a small child wandering the streets. The still naive boy is greeted by a former companion who enthusiastically tells him to hurry up and follow him to his castle. Seeing a magnificent castle in the distance, he is told that it is Griffith's castle and that he only has a little bit further to go. The young Griffith suddenly recognizes his compatriot and remembers that he died under his command, at this he is startled to see that the very ground beneath him is paved with hundreds of bodies and blood. The fortune-teller from his youth appears in the vision to tell him that the road towards Griffith's dream has been paved with much bloodshed and sacrifice, and that he should not stop now or else all the blood upon his hands will have been for nothing. Upon the vision ending, Griffith is left bewildered and asks what was it that he had just seen. The Godhand tells him that they merely showed him his own heart and soul, that it is his destiny to achieve his dream. They tell him that all he needs to do is give them permission to end the lives of each of his men in the Band Of The Hawk as blood-sacrifice, then they will give him ultimate power. They emotionally manipulate Griffith by saying that since every one of his men would gladly die for him in battle, then it is no different then having them die for him now in sacrifice in payment for his dream. They say that the Band Of The Hawk practically wants to die for him now, and that he only has to pave his road with a few more bodies in order to achieve his dream. As Guts confronts Griffith, he bitterly realizes that all his shattered dreams and pain began when Guts left him, and in that moment he gives in and states that he will offer them up as sacrifice. As Griffith is transformed into a being of greater power, the Godhand painfully brands each member of the Band Of The Hawk with a symbol of sacrifice. At this hundreds of monsters and deamons attack them to begin "The Grand Feast", gruesomly devouring and torturing every character whom the audience has spent all of this time getting to know and root for. In the last moments of transforming, a single tear leaves Griffith's eye as he nervously asks what just happened. The Godhand goats to him that what just left his eye is the last tear he shall ever shed. At this he is transformed into the fifth member of the Godhand, a dark entity named Femto....

Did He Do Anything Wrong? Now before we get into the absolute worst part of The Eclipse, let us consider if "Griffith did nothing wrong" is true or not. One must consider an important detail in The Eclipse, the moment of "the last tear you shall ever shed". This might heavily suggest that with this shed tear also went any capacity at empathy or compassion, that they utterly removed all goodness from Griffith's soul and left a dark husk. One could argue that Griffith as a man died in that moment, and a dark mockery of his soul was left to become Femto. Some argue that Femto and Griffith are two completely different entities entirely, and that everything that happened after turning into Femto is not Griffith's fault. If you only focus on only everything up to that point, then you could argue that Griffith "did nothing wrong" if you look at it from a certain point of view. He had undergone a year of horrific torture, had his dreams and legacy snatched from his grasp, and was left a hollow-husk barely able to sit upright. In his moment of absolute despair he was given the chance to finally gain the ultimate power to achieve his dream, and the Godhand emotionally manipulated him into believing that it was only right to make one more sacrifice to reach his vision. As one fan stated "wouldn’t you do the same if you went through all of that, with the realization that if you don't then you will spend what little time you have left pitfully wasting away as you are hunted down by the king's goons?" However, when you get down to it: what he did was a massive dirt-bag move towards his allies and friends. They had put their lives on the line to break Griffith out of the prison, many of them dying in the process. They had worked so hard to rescue him only to be thrown under the bus because some creepy god-dudes offered Griffith to join their club and have cool powers. Being gorily torn to ribbons and eaten by monsters is not how any of them should have been rewarded for saving Griffith! Sure Griffith at this moment clearly "did something wrong", you can at least understand why he did it and perhaps partially forgive him for doing it. HOWEVER, there is absolutely nothing anyone can say to forgive what happened after Griffith became Femto! Upon being reborn as a powerful deity, Femto proceeded to do unspeakable acts upon Casca right in front of Guts. Casca had first met Griffith when he rescued her as a young woman from a pervy nobleman whom was attempting to have his way with her, so the very act of doing such unspeakable things to her is beyond messed up. As Guts is forced to watch, pinned down upon the ground by deamons, it mirrors a horrific event from his own youth when one of his adoptive father's men pinned him down upon the ground and did unspeakable things. Knowing how this event in his past messed Guts up so much that the very act of anyone touching him would send him into a raging panic, Casca pleads to Guts to look away and not watch. This whole event is so horrific that Casca's mind and sanity is completely destroyed, and Guts' and her unborn son is born stillborn as a twisted monster. It is only because of the arrival of a mysterious knight in skeleton-armor who rescues them that Guts, Casca, and a young boy escape The Eclipse as the only survivors. Did I mention that the souls of every member of The Band Of The Hawk are now doomed to spend eternity in the Berserk version of Hell because of the sacrifice? For these last events during The Eclipse THERE IS NO REASON ANYONE COULD ARGUE that "Femto (Post-Godhand Griffith) did nothing wrong"! What do you guys think? Did Griffith Do Nothing Wrong? Yes! Nothing Excuses ANYTHING He Did! Yes! But I Understand Why He Did It Maybe.... It's A Very Grey Area No! He Was Manipulated Into Doing It By The Godhand And They Removed His Ability To Have Empathy No! He Has NEVER Done Anything Wrong No! His Acts Are Understandable Vote! (View results)
