The prognosticating Punxsutawney Phil was once again consulted for his umbral observations.

That is to say, just as they do every Groundhog Day, a group of passionate people led by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club gathered to see if the beloved groundhog saw his shadow.

Here’s the result: according to his official handlers in the Groundhog Club, Phil saw his shadow which means, according to tradition, we are in for six more weeks of winter.

Crowds were welcomed back to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney for the ceremony, following last year’s cancelation of public events due to COVID-19.

But not even the pandemic could stop Phil’s predictions last year. And this year he was back before a live crowd at 7:15 a.m. to share the year’s predictions.

It’s not the result many of us may have been hoping for, but there is cause for hope: it turns out that Phil’s predictions (or at least, the Groundhog Club’s interpretations of those predictions) are only right somewhere around 40 percent of the time.

This result was also something of an upset as far as the odds were concerned. Bookies had predicted the likelihood of Phil seeing his shadow with odds of 11/4 - only about a one in four chance.
