Diet

Diet is very important to the health of your Savannah Monitor. The foods you should stay away from are, Carp Fish (goldfish), as they have minimal nutrional value and can become toxic to reptiles. Dog/Cat Foods contain high levels of fat which can collect on your monitor's organs and kill them. Hotdogs, and any other highly processed, random meat foods can also contain high levels of fats, sodium and other harmful ingredients. Any meats that have been seasoned such as sausage, salomi, pepperoni, etc can be toxic. Also stay away from any pre-cooked meats.**Some people have been noted deep freezing to kill off parasites and salmonella from any game meats.Foods that are safe for your monitor are :Whole prey
  • Captive raised insects
  • Crickets, Roaches
  • Mealworms
  • Super worms
  • Wax worms
  • Silk worms
  • Horn worms

  • Snails, Crayfish
  • Whole shrimp

Raw meats:

Picture Establishing a feeding schedule is always a good idea. Monitors react well to structure. In some ways it gives them a bit of security. In feeding baby monitors it's good to feed daily as much as they are interested in eating in one sitting. Also stick to mainly feeder insects and worms and no more than one small mouse a week. Rodent feeding is highly debated. As they get older it's good to feed them every other day to every three days and you can start feeding other items like raw meats. Always remember to feed your Savannah Monitor the correct sized food. Nothing too big for them to handle. Even some babies are too small for baby mice so take it slow. A guideline for size is nothing larger than the space between their eyes and no longer than their head. If a food item is too large they can easily choke. Too large of a food item may also cause problems with full digestion and make the monitor lethargic.*Variety is key when feeding your monitor*Stick with low fat foods*Stay away from feeding organ meats
