Go outside, put your model on small stand or something to position it 3-4 ft off the ground. Now walk away 500m and turn around to look at it and see for yourself how far it is and how small it looks. First hand knowledge of what it will look like will be invaluable to you.

500 meters is 1640 feet or about 546 yards. So it would be about 5 and a half football fields in length. Now if you were in the USMC, 500 meters was the distance to the long range rifle targets that you had to shoot at to qualify as a rifleman. But the closer you are to ground the less the range for a RC system. So you may not be able to get out that far if the aircraft is down close to ground.

To visualize, this is what i do: Go to google earth and find a nearby park or flying site you can use regularly, and then mark off the ranges with the ruler tool. Pick a good place to set up your equipment, and then measure from there. If you follow the road alongside your site, are there any landmarks around 500 metes away? Is there anything at 1km away? In my case. 100m = hospital, 300m = helipad, 500m = mcdonalds, 1km = high voltage tower, 1.5km = water park, 2km = highway exit ramp. These are places i can walk to every day so i have a pretty good idea of what they are physically. When i spent a day at the beach and flew along the coastline as well as going out to sea following the sandbar at low tide, i thought i got pretty far until i looked it up on google earth and realized i only flew a mcdonalds

5.5 football fields if you don't include the end zones. 4.5 if you do
