What is a Dispenser and What Does It Do in Minecraft
With up to nine inventory slots available, Dispensers are primarily used to shoot out items in Minecraft. While it may vary, Dispensers have been known to commonly storage items such as Arrows, Armor, and even fish in a bucket.
Dispensers shine when made for defensive purposes because they’ll shoot whatever is in their path, or if you’re trying to suit up like a superhero too. So if you’re trying to get an item and want it to look fancy, dispensers are the tool for you.
How to Make a Dispenser
To get a Dispenser, you’re going to need a few items first. Listed below are all the items you will need to craft a Dispenser, as well as a screenshot demonstrating the recipe placement.
- Cobblestone: 7
- Bow: 1
- Redstone Dust: 1
How to use a Dispenser
To use a Dispenser all you need to do is place a power source next to it. That could be a level, or a button, and the dispenser will shoot. You can make the dispenser automatic too. If you tamper with it using Redstone.
What Can a Dispenser Shoot
Dispensers can shoot a wide range of items and some have different effects than others. Listed below are all the items a dispenser can shoot and what they do when shot.
- Armor
- Elytra
When shot out of a Dispenser, it lands on a player and it'll go into your inventory. But if it lands any Skeleton variant, Zombie variant, or an Armor stand it’ll be equipped on any of them.
- Arrow (Any Arrow)
It’ll shoot in the direction that the Dispenser is facing.
- Bone Meal
The dispenser will shoot the bone meal at whatever block is in front of it, and fertilize the crops.
- Bottle o' Enchanting
- Egg
- Snowball
- Splash Potion
- Lingering Potion
The dispenser will shoot all the items listed above in whatever direction it’s facing like it would with an arrow. But all the items listed above will break as soon as they touch the ground.
- Fire Charge
The dispenser will shoot out the Fire Charge and it’ll keep flying until something is hit. So it’s best to use these when you have a target in mind because if you’re not careful, it’s easy to start a wildfire.
- Firework Rocket
When a Firework Rocket is put into a dispenser it’ll shoot in whatever way the dispenser is facing.
- Flint and Steel
When a Flint and Steel is placed in a dispenser it’ll light whatever is in front of the dispenser on fire. You can turn it on and off. But doing so will cause the Flint and Steel to break down after a while.
- Bucket
Buckets are fun to put in a dispenser because they can do a few different things. If you have Lava or Water in the bucket and place it in the dispenser, it’ll act as a source for either one, but the second you turn off the dispenser the flow will stop. If you put in a bucket of powdered snow a snow block will come out. Lastly, if you place a bucket with a mob in it, the mob will shoot out of the dispenser.
- Boat
If the dispenser is in water with a boat in it, the boat will come out right in front of the dispenser, ready to be used.
- Minecart (Any Kind)
If a minecart is placed in a dispenser, make sure that the rails are touching it. Because if not the dispenser will shoot the minecart out as an item and you won’t be able to ride it.
- TNT
If TNT is placed in the dispenser and shot out, it’ll automatically be lit. The TNT only travels one block away from the dispenser, so be sure to use this method wisely or it could cost you.
- Shears
If shears are placed in the dispenser, it’ll do what shears usually do with Mooshrooms, Sheep, and Snow Golems. It’ll also harvest honey from a Beehive and a Bee Nest. But the more you use the Shears, the more it’ll begin to break down.
- Horse Armor
- Saddle
Both a saddle and armor will automatically be equpidedTamed Horse.
- Carpet (Java Only)
If a carpet is placed in a dispenser and shot out on a Tamed Llama it’ll dress up the Llama.
- Chest (Java Only)
If a chest is placed in a dispenser and shot out on a Tamed Llama, Tamed Donkey, or a Tamed Mule it’ll equip the chest on them for you.
- Honeycomb
If a Honeycomb is placed in a dispenser and a copper block is in front of it, it’ll wax the block.
If anything else is put in the dispenser, it’ll shoot it out as an item to be picked up.
