How to Make Moon Rocks – Sparkly & Fun

These DIY moon rocks are super easy to make and a great for not only crafts, but science experiments as well. They actually resemble real moon rocks! Making moon rocks is a great craft for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners and elementary aged students. Whether you’re making these moon rocks at home or in the classroom, they are so much fun to make!

DIY Moon Rocks

As a child, I always wanted to see a Moon Rock. There’s just something fascinating about the moon and outer space. So when my son started asking questions about that big ol’ rock in the sky, I decided to make our own version with these DIY Moon Rocks.

How to Make Moon Rocks

This easy play recipe takes some Moon Sand and adds a bit more moisture to make it moldable to form into rocks. We made them black with some shiny glitter to simulate the sun reflecting off the surface of the moon.

Supplies You Need To Make DIY Moon Rocks

4 cups baking soda
1/4 cup water
Gold glitter and Silver glitter
Black food coloring

Directions To Make Moon Rocks

DIY Moon Rocks that are black with gold and silver sparkles — Add black food coloring and gold and silver glitter to make moon rocks.

Step 1

In a large plastic bin, mix together the baking soda and water.

Step 2

Add lots of glitter and stir until the glitter well mixed.

Step 3

Add some food coloring. Gel will probably be a more bold color, but if it is water based you may need a few drops to make sure your moon rocks aren’t just gray.

Step 4

Mix together well and make sure all the food coloring is incorporated into the baking soda mixture.

Step 5

You can let your kids explore this easy Moon Sand for a bit (warning: their hands will get messy because of the food coloring!), or you can go right to making your rocks.

Step 6

Mold the sand with your hand to shape it into rocks. We pressed our fingers into it to form craters on the surface.

Step 7

Allow to dry overnight.

Our Experience With How To Make Moon Rocks

The rocks will be brittle, but kids will love examining them!

They’re much prettier than the Moon Rocks retrieved by astronauts aboard the six landing Apollo missions. Those rocks are stored at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

My son loved learning about the rocks, and how they have to be kept in Nitrogen so that they won’t get moisture. We talked about how adding moisture to the Moon Rocks would change their composition and cause them to fall apart. We even tried adding some water to our own DIY Moon Rocks!

Materials

4 cups baking soda

How many moon rocks does one recipe make?

Approximately what size were your moon rocks? How many were you able to make? I’d like to make these with my students at school, and am trying to figure out how much baking soda I’ll need.

I tried to make a half batch, but they would not stick together to form a ball. the product was too crumbly. Please advise.

1. Hi, Amanda! I’m sorry to hear that! I would try gradually adding a tiny amount of extra water until it gets to the consistency you would like!

We have made these moon rocks multiple times! It is surprisingly easy to make moon rocks and kids of literally any age think they are cool.
