Introduction

DMX was an American professional rapper and actor with an estimated net worth of -$1 Million.

Before Wealth & Fame

DMX’s father left him at a young age, and his mother was abusive. His childhood was chaotic and violent, which led to group homes and surviving on the streets.

In his teen years, Earl had many run-ins with the law and was often violent. Survival on the streets led him to being in and out of prison, and to drug and alcohol use at a young age. Salvation came in the form of hip-hop, and he started out as a DJ and human beatbox before transitioning into rapping. DMX became known in the freestyle rap scene and quickly found himself written up in The Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype column.

Music Career

One of the founding fathers of the hip-hop music scene, DMX began his career at the peak of its initial surge to popularity in the mid-1980s. In 1985, he began beatboxing with rapper Ready Ron, from which he derived the acronym “Divine Master of the Unknown,” which later formed the basis of his DMX moniker. He would go on to become one of the richest rappers in the world, working with major labels and collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry.

Following a period in which he struggled to break through into the industry while performing with Ready Ron, DMX got his first break in 1991. After signing to the relatively unknown record label Ruff Ryders Entertainment, DMX broke through to mainstream outlets and gained attention.

Later in 1991, his signing to Chaos Records, a subsidiary of Columbia Records, led to his first major single release, “Born Loser,” in 1993. While a deal with Death Row Records in 1994 failed to materialize, in 1996, DMX hit the big time with his signing to Def Jam Records. The label, part-owned by Dr. Dre, had seen DMX’s long-standing associate, Irv Gotti, take the spot as president of A&R, who helped launch his career.

Debut Album & Commercial Success

DMX’s work with the iconic hip-hop label would prove to be a game-changer for the rapper, with his first RIAA gold-certified release coming with “Get at Me Dog.” He collaborated with LL Cool J on the single “4, 3, 2, 1” and released his debut album in 1998, selling over 5 million copies and topping the Billboard charts. This was followed by a multi-platinum-selling album, Flesh’ n ‘Blood, cementing his growing reputation in the genre.

DMX continued a chart-topping run of releases throughout the late 1990s, picking up a nomination for a Grammy Award for the single “Party Up (Up in Here).” Throughout his career, DMX collaborated with a diverse range of artists spanning multiple mainstream music genres. He appeared alongside Godsmack and Limp Bizkit at the Anger Management Tour, which brought together luminaries of hip-hop and Nu Metal artists.

Acting & Video Game Appearances

Like many other hugely successful rappers, DMX enjoyed a lucrative and productive career spanning various areas of the entertainment industry. Since 1998, he has appeared in many movies, from the action-packed Romeo Must Die to the biographical documentary, DMX: Don’t Try to Understand. His other notable media appearances include numerous direct-to-DVD movies, such as Last Hour, Lords of the Street, and The Bleeding.

These were accompanied by many guest appearances on high-profile chat shows, including Jimmy Kimmel and The Sharon Osbourne Show in 2004. He has also performed voice acting duties for video games, notably as himself in the sports game Street Hoops and Def Jam Vendetta.

Bankruptcy Filings

DMX has faced severe financial issues throughout his career, including bankruptcy, with his first claim being in 2009. Although there is limited information about the bankruptcy, it appears he filed the claim to protect his New York home and to address debts exceeding $2 million. The case was dismissed at the time due to DMX’s failure to appear in court and provide the necessary documents; however, this didn’t prevent him from filing again at a later date.

Four years later, on July 29, 2013, DMX filed for bankruptcy a second time in the Manhattan Bankruptcy Court. The Chapter 11 claim revealed that he owed between $1 million and $10 million, with total assets valued at less than $50,000. His debts included $1.24 million in overdue child support and more than $21,000 on a car lease. The case was again dismissed due to DMX’s failure to file documentation on time, and his debts were not discharged; however, he was allowed to refile once he was better prepared.

Child Support Payments

Another issue for DMX was the amount owed in child support for his 15 children with nine mothers. In July 2015, he spent 6 months in jail after he was arrested shortly before an appearance at New York City’s Radio City. His prison term came after he was accused of failing to pay $400,000 in child support to his ex-wife, Tashera Simmons. His mounting child support payments also led him to file for bankruptcy again in 2016. DMX filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in an attempt to save his New York home.​

Court documents showed that his debts included $950,000 in bank loans, $304,796 in child support, $230,898 in back-dated child support payments, and $1.4 million in other family support, totaling roughly $2,030,970.​ DMX was reported to have no stake in the copyrights or trademarks of his music, and he didn’t own any cars, electronics, or jewelry of real value. He listed only his Mount Kisco home, valued at an estimated $350,000, as an asset and claimed he had no bank account at the time of his final bankruptcy filing.

Tax Issues

DMX was charged with tax fraud in 2017 after it was alleged that between 2002 and 2005, he failed to pay approximately $1.7 million in federal income taxes. During the hearing, it was also revealed that between 2010 and 2015, DMX had earned over $2.3 million but did not file personal tax returns for those years.

Reportedly, in an effort to avoid paying taxes, he insisted on being paid in cash, and if that wasn’t possible, he funneled income through other people’s accounts. He was charged with 14 counts, including tax evasion, failure to file returns, and obstruction of the IRS.

At the end of the trial, DMX pleaded guilty to a single count of tax evasion that occurred in 2017. He was sentenced to one year in prison, followed by supervised release, and ordered to pay over $2.29 million to the IRS. Sadly, after his death at the age of 50, he left no will, an estate deeply in debt, and ongoing legal and financial disputes among his ex-partners and children.
