Do Root Canals Require Multiple Visits? | GentleWave Procedure

When the root canal system of a tooth is infected or inflamed, root canal therapy is needed. During endodontic treatment (treatment on the interior of the tooth, such as root canals), the infected pulp within the root canal is removed and the cavity is cleaned.
Standard Root Canal Treatment Requires Two Visits
Standard root canal treatment can be explained in four main steps, completed during two visits to your dentist or endodontist. These steps include:

- A dental instrument is used to create an opening in the crown of the tooth, providing access to the canal of the tooth.
- Files and treatment fluids are used to remove the infected tissue, and to clean and disinfect the root canal system.
- The roots of the tooth are filled to prevent reinfection, usually with a substance called gutta-percha.
- Standard root canal treatment often includes a second visit to complete the treatment.
During the time between the first and second visit, patients are directed to use caution when applying pressure to the repaired tooth.*
While standard root canal treatment requires two visits, the GentleWave® Procedure can typically be completed in just one visit.
A One-Visit Alternative to Standard Root Canal Treatment
In most cases, the GentleWave Procedure can be completed in just one visit, eliminating the need for a second. With just one GentleWave Procedure, patients enjoy an effective cleaning and disinfecting of the root canal system, which means they are less likely to require additional treatments in years to come.4
Patients describe it as a more comfortable alternative.
“After two painful standard root canal treatments, the GentleWave Procedure was a comfortable and surprisingly relaxing experience! I was in and out in an hour and back to work. I would definitely recommend the GentleWave Procedure to my family and friends!” - E. Simon, San Marcos, CA
