One day my cousin and her friend decided to say the most surprising thing: strawberries have no smell to them. I was shocked and appalled. She insisted, even said that she smelt some strawberries that she just brought but couldn't smell anything. She saw something on the internet that said strawberries have no smell and was just as shocked but thought it was right. Now everytime I have strawberries, I have to smell them to prove her wrong😅. So do strawberries have a smell or na?

I've always thought they smell of strawberries but the very existence of this thread make me paranoid and that I might simply have been imagining it.

Hmmm describing scents is hard but strawberries definitely smell sweet, they smell fresh, and there's sort of a deepness/fullness to the smell, especially if it's a more ripe strawberry. They sometimes don't smell very strong to me when they're whole (they still smell a bit though), but when they're cut, it's a pretty obvious strawberry scent

Yeah, they definitely have a smell ... that's why there's such a thing as an artificial "strawberry" smell! And they smell like a very sweet berry -- kind of hard to describe how berries smell, besides saying like berries. A sweeter fresh-vegetable type smell?

I've, definitely, noticed that strawberries have a scent, especially after picking fresh strawberries on a farm (compared to strawberries from a grocery store).

A freshly picked strawberry doesn't smell like the taste of strawberries unless it's damaged, it smells more like leaves/grass. If you cut the strawberry open, then it smells of strawberry.

The outside isn't very strong, but when you cut into one, it's kind of a fresh sweet smell.

I love strawberries, and I’ve sliced and eaten many! Without slicing them, they usually have a more tart kind of smell, but when I slice a whole bunch of them, I can definitely pick up on their sweet, tart, planty kind of scent. The more ripe they get, the sweeter they smell. If they’ve gone bad their smell gets kind of a sickly tang to it.

This leads to the question of what do strawberry scented things actually smell of if strawberries have no smell? 🤯

Since strawberries are non-climacteric that might be early picking and ethylene reddening.

I think they have a scent when they are bunched up in a bowl, but no, individual strawberries do not have a scent nor a secret.

Yes, they have a smell.

I use to work with a person who would argue that apples have no taste. Apparently, they taste nice is not a rebuttal to it :(

the real rebuttal should have been about how green apples and red apples have different tastes

Tell that to certain breeds of dogs. 🐕 🙃

That makes me think, when someone lets one fly, how do dogs deal with it? Incidentally I reckon it wasn't much fun to be a dog in the days of ultrasonic remote controls.

Well, here's an article I just found on the dogs with the best sense of smell:

https://dogtime.com/dog-health/general/18724-10-dog-breeds-with-the-best-sense-of-smell

I think it was on Rescue 911 that I heard of a dog that could separate the vegetables in a bowl of vegetable soup, but I don't recall the breed.

Yes, they have a smell (especially when they're warm from the sun) but it isn't like anything "strawberry-scented" like soap or shampoo. I guess not as sweet or strong as artificial strawberry scent?

There is definitely a smell. Strawberries smell sweet and a bit... tangy? There is something of the sharpness of an orange, but altered or mixed with a calmer scent—something like blueberries? I don’t know. It isn’t a heavy smell. I’d say it is a pretty light, too—not that the smell isn’t strong (it can be)—it’s just bright? I think “it would be hard for it to become overpowering,” might be a better way of phrasing it. Why is describing a smell so hard?

Short answer, yes, sweet, grassy, fruity, and very slightly sour.

Yeah I've smelled them as mum grows them in her garden and I always smell stuff before I eat it. However some (like very large shop ones) sometimes have much less scent and flavour. My friend said that in the UK a lot of flowers don't have scent as they've been heavily genetically modified to be as large and colourful as possible, could be the same with the strawberries your cousin smelled!

Also the strawberries in mum's garden have a very sweet 'strawberry' smell, which is where the fake scent gets its name and distinctive aroma. Shop bought strawberries are rarely as good is all.
