QUINCY, Ill., (KHQA) — Fall is the time of year when the days get shorter, right?

Not exactly. The daylight hours get shorter and nighttime does get longer. But, there are still 24 hours in a day, and as of today, there's no evidence to suggest the days get shorter on Earth, just like the Mars hoax of years ago - will be as big as the moon next July. If you believe that, I have a mountain in Kansas I'd like to sell you.

During the autumn months, the sun begins to shine more in the southern hemisphere due to Earth's tilt relative to its orbit around the sun.

Spring begins in the southern hemisphere as our fall begins. When our winter begins in December, the southern hemisphere rejoices with summer's return. People in the southern hemisphere enjoy the longest amount of daylight, while we experience the shortest period of sun. The sun's apparent motion will bring its position further north crossing the equator on March 22, the Vernal Equinox, when our daylight hours get longer and the days get shorter in the southern hemisphere.

All this allows us to enjoy four seasons each year. It is different across the equatorial zone where subtle changes allow a rather nice weather pattern pretty much year round. It could be worse where portions of Alaska won't see any sun until next March. Enjoy the day!
