Do You Need The Highest SEER Rating Central Air Conditioning?

What SEER Rating Do I Need?

When it comes to buying a new air conditioning system, you’ve probably heard the term SEER rating. But what does SEER stand for, and how does it affect your comfort, energy bills, and the environment? At billyGO, we’re here to break it down for you—

no jargon, just straight answers. Plus, we’ll share real-world insights and a few stories from the field.

What Does SEER Stand For?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. SEER measures the cooling efficiency of an air conditioner or heat pump over a typical cooling season.

Think of it like a car’s miles-per-gallon rating: the higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit. But remember, just like driving conditions affect your car’s MPG, your AC’s efficiency varies based on real-world factors like outdoor temperatures and how well your home is insulated.

Our HVAC Install Manager, Mike, likes to explain SEER ratings by comparing them to motocross bikes. “It’s like buying top-notch motocross bike—you’ll notice the difference in performance, but its output still depends on how well you drive and maintain the bike. The same goes for SEER ratings. A higher number means potential savings, but it’s only as good as the system’s install, setup and maintenance.”

What is the Minimum SEER Rating for Texas in 2025?

In 2025, the minimum SEER rating for new air conditioning systems in Texas is 15. This means that any new AC unit installed in Texas must have a SEER rating of 15 or higher.

This Texas SEER requirement changed in 2023 from a rating of 14 to 15.

This does not mean you have to replace your AC system if you have a lower SEER. What it does mean is that when it comes time to replace your current AC system you will only be able to purchase and install a new air conditioner with a SEER of 15 or above in 2025.

What Is a Good SEER Rating?

The answer depends on your needs and location. Here’s a quick overview for Texas:

  • Minimum SEER Standards:
    • Before 2006: 10 SEER
    • 2006–2014: 13 SEER
    • 2015-2022: 14 SEER
    • 2023-Today: 15 SEER
  • Today’s High-Efficiency Options:
    • Most units range from 15 to 22 SEER.
    • The highest SEER ratings can hit 25 or more, but these are luxury-tier systems.

A SEER rating between 17 and 18 often hits the “sweet spot” for balancing cost and efficiency, especially in hotter climates like North Texas.

Do You Need the Highest SEER Rating?

Not necessarily! Here’s why:

  • Cost vs. Savings: Higher SEER units cost more upfront. While they save on energy bills, it might take years to recoup the investment.
  • Your Home’s Needs: Factors like insulation, ductwork, and personal cooling preferences influence the ideal SEER rating.
  • Durability: High-SEER systems often have advanced components, which can be pricier to repair.

One of our customers upgraded to a 20 SEER system last year. They live in a large, older home in Fort Worth and noticed a significant drop in their summer energy bills, which is what they wanted. However, their neighbor, who opted for a 16 SEER unit, spent far less upfront and is still very happy with their cooling performance. The key takeaway? One size doesn’t fit all.

Single-Speed, Two-Speed, and Variable-Speed Compressors

Beyond SEER ratings, the type of compressor in your AC plays a big role in comfort and efficiency:

  • Single-Speed: Runs at full power or not at all.
  • Two-Speed: Adjusts between full and partial power based on demand.
  • Variable-Speed: Offers precise control, running at optimal levels for your cooling needs. These are the quietest and most efficient but come with higher costs.

Finding The Right SEER AC For You

For most homeowners:

  • Hot Climates (Texas): A 17-18 SEER unit with a variable-speed compressor provides a great balance of comfort, efficiency, and cost.
  • Milder Climates: A 14-16 SEER unit is often sufficient.

Benefits of Higher SEER Ratings

  • Lower Energy Bills: Units with higher SEER ratings consume less electricity.
  • Improved Comfort: Longer run times help dehumidify your home and maintain consistent temperatures.
  • Quieter Operation: Advanced systems operate more quietly, enhancing indoor comfort.
  • Eco-Friendly: Higher efficiency means a smaller carbon footprint.

Let’s look at an example. One of our HVAC Master Technicians, Troy, recently worked with a family in Arlington who struggled with high humidity inside their home. They opted for an 18 SEER system with a variable-speed compressor. Not only did their energy bills drop, but they also noticed their home feels fresher, and they have had fewer issues with mold and mildew because their new AC is running at the optimum frequency.

What Is the Highest SEER Rating for an Air Conditioner?

The highest SEER rating available today is around 25. While impressive, these ultra-efficient models are often overkill for most homes. Unless you’re in an extremely hot climate or planning to stay in your home for at least 10 years, a 17-20 SEER system is likely your best bet if you want a higher SEER system at a reasonable price.

Other Factors to Consider

  • System Size: An oversized or undersized system won’t perform efficiently, no matter the SEER rating.
  • Ductwork: Leaky or poorly insulated ducts can undermine your AC’s efficiency.
  • Thermostat Settings: Smart thermostats can enhance the performance of high-SEER systems.
