The game autosaves every 2 seconds. You don't really need to 'Save and Exit' unless you want to return to the main menu or if you've changed the autosave interval using a mod such as OptiFine. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack

This is only true for level.dat; chunks are not saved unless they were modified within the last 30 seconds (as the Wiki says), and force-quitting the game will likely cause corrupted chunks (at the least, not saving recent changes, at the worst, severe corruption that lags out/crashes the game when you try to load the world or chunks simply regenerating from scratch). Actually, even "save and quit to title" doesn't always work (see this bug report) because the internal server has a mind of its own (a separate thread) and the client doesn't wait for it to shut down until you can quit the game or try to delete the world (which may fail since you can't delete files still in use, leaving old files on disk so you then create a new world with the same name and get old chunks in the new world). Old versions of the game displayed a "saving" message when you paused, indicating that the save process was occurring and you could just wait until it stopped before quitting; the game may have also prevented you from quitting until it finished (I believe up to 1.3 when the SSP-SMP merge occurred). (the fix is actually pretty simple; force the client to wait for the internal server to shut down, which I modded into the game myself and Forge also adds it; actually, I took my fix from Forge; although I've never seen any errors or bugs except when I intentionally tried replicating them or quickly make test worlds when modding) Rollback Post to Revision RollBack
