Universal Records Deal
In May 2022, Drake signed a mega-deal with Universal Music Group, reportedly estimated to be worth around $400 million. This “expansive, multi-faceted” agreement covers his recordings, publishing, merchandise, and visual media project rights.
News of the deal, confirmed by UMG chairman Sir Lucian Grainge on May 3, 2022, marked the latest in a series of deals focused on “expanded portfolios” that provide the label with stakes in multiple revenue streams tied to an artist.
The arrangement, representing one of the most significant agreements in music history, demonstrates Drake’s enormous success and influence in the business, with his songs bringing in approximately $50 million a year. Hints of the deal surfaced earlier in 2021 when Drake referenced a massive advance of $360 million in his song “Lemon Pepper Freestyle.”
Previously signed to Young Money/Cash Money Records, Drake’s new contract with UMG significantly enhances his control and earnings potential across multiple media platforms.
Expenditure
Drake has a vast collection of unique cars. He likes to purchase extreme and rare cars, and he gets all of his vehicles imported and customized. He has a Boeing 767 jet plane, which he customized with his own logo, “Air Drake.” The plane is valued at $185 million.
Drake has a considerable interest in jewelry, another luxury expense for him. His fashion brand’s logo, an owl, has been featured in many pieces of jewelry. Drake has multiple custom-made necklaces that are each worth up to $100,000.
Real Estate
YOLO Estate
In 2012, Drake purchased a 12,500-square-foot mansion in Hidden Hills, California, for $7.7 million. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he mentioned that the home, dubbed the “YOLO Estate”, was his computer screensaver years before he bought it. The estate comprises six bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, a full-size basketball court, a theater room, and an outdoor pool with cave and waterfall features.
He also purchased two adjacent properties. In 2015, he paid $2.85 million for the 4,445-square-foot ranch house next door. In 2018, he bought the adjacent 2,500-square-foot home for $4.5 million. The two properties added 3.6 acres to the “YOLO Estate”, which totaled 6.7 acres.
After owning the original estate for ten years, the rapper listed it on the market for $14.8 million in 2022. The option was also available to purchase the compound for $22.2 million, comprising the three homes, 13 bedrooms, 19,445 square feet of living space, and 6.7 acres of land. Drake paid a total price of $15.05 million for the compound.
The properties were all sold separately, and a deal was closed for all three within the same year. The original “YOLO Estate” sold for $12 million, the middle house sold to NFL star Matthew Stafford for $5 million, and the smaller house sold for $6 million. All three sales totaled $23 million, which, after considering property taxes and agent fees, likely netted Drake around $5 million in profit.
Beverly Hills Mega Mansion
In 2022, Drake purchased a 24,757-square-foot mega mansion in Beverly Hills, California, from singer Robbie Williams for $75 million. The home has every amenity you could desire, including a luxury home gym, an enormous wine cellar, a games room, and a full-size tennis court. A year later, he returned the property to the market, asking for $88 million. At the time of writing, it’s currently still for sale. If Drake manages to close a sale at $88 million, he should net around $8 million in profit.
The Inn at Dos Brisas
The rapper’s most recent property investment was in 2023, when he spent a reported $15 million on a famous Ranch named The Inn at Dos Brisas in Washington, Texas. The property was once one of the most highly rated hotels in the area. The property was initially listed for sale with an asking price of $17.5 million, which was eventually reduced to $15 million.
