Introduction
Drew Carey is an American professional actor, voice actor, comedian, sports executive, and game show host with an estimated net worth of $165 Million.
Career
Drew Carey’s comedy career began in 1985 when he followed a suggestion to check out joke-writing books from the library.
In 1986, after refining his act, he won an open mic contest and became Master of Ceremonies at the Cleveland Comedy Club.
Carey then performed at comedy clubs in Cleveland, Ohio, and Los Angeles during the late 1980s, building his repertoire.
His first national exposure came in 1988 when he competed on Star Search, produced by T.P.E./Rysher Entertainment and hosted by Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson’s associate.
Carey impressed Johnny Carson with his stand-up performance on The Tonight Show in November 1991, earning an invitation to the couch, a rare honor.
In 1991, Carey also appeared on HBO’s 14th Annual Young Comedians Special and Late Night with David Letterman, further enhancing his reputation.
Carey wrote and starred in his stand-up comedy special, “Drew Carey: Human Cartoon,” which won a CableACE Award for Best Writing in 1994.
Earning Millions With His Own Show
Carey then appeared in a small role in the 1993 film Coneheads as a taxi passenger alongside Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Adam Sandler, and Michelle Burke.
In 1994, he co-starred in the short-lived N.B.C. sitcom The Good Life and was hired as a consultant for the show Someone Like Me.
Then Carey and Bruce Helford collaborated to develop “The Drew Carey Show,” which premiered on A.B.C. on September 13, 1995. The show ran for an impressive nine years, producing 233 episodes and earning Carey millions of dollars in fees and royalties.
He won an Emmy Award for Best Spoken Comedy Album in 1997 for his “Dirty Jokes And Beer: Stories Of The Unrefined” book.
Making It Onto The Highest-Paid List
Carey also hosted the American version of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” from 1998 to 2006, was inducted into the New York Friars’ Club, and was roasted on Comedy Central.
In 1998, Carey ranked 24th on Forbes’ highest-paid entertainers list with $45.5 million, making him one of the richest comedians in the world. He joined entertainers like Dave Chappelle and Sacha Baron Cohen, who all made incredible amounts of money from their comedic skills.
Carey co-produced and starred in Drew Carey’s “Green Screen Show,” which aired on the W.B. and later on Comedy Central.
In 2011, Carey hosted “Drew Carey’s Improv-A-Ganza,” a primetime improv show filmed in Las Vegas, and founded the Improv All-Stars. The group performs unscripted skits and tours comedy clubs across the U.S. while Carey began hosting the C.B.S. game show Power of 10 in 2007.
After Bob Barker retired, Carey became the host of “The Price Is Right” in October 2007, celebrating his 15th anniversary as host in 2022.
In 2000, Carey appeared in the Sims House Party expansion pack and had cameo appearances in music videos for “Weird Al” Yankovic.
Becoming A New York Times Bestselling Author
He made a guest appearance in WWE’s Royal Rumble match in 2001 and starred in the television film Geppetto, taking singing lessons for the role.
Carey provided entertainment for the 2002 Annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner and hosted “Play for a Billion on the W.B.” with Jamie Kennedy in 2003.
Drew Carey’s Sporting Adventures debuted on the Travel Channel in 2006, featuring Carey at the FIFA World Cup in Germany.
He guest-starred in The Simpsons and Community and competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2014, finishing in a respectable 8th place.
Carey hosted a radio show on SiriusXM, which became a weekly show called The Friday Night Freak Out in 2018.
He appeared on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune in 2021 and participated in the 2023 documentary “The Game Show Show.”
Carey published his autobiography, Dirty Jokes and Beer: Stories of the Unrefined, in 1997, which stayed on The New York Times Bestseller list for three months.
The Drew Carey Show Salary
In 1995, Carey signed a five-year contract with ABC to host The Drew Carey Show. The network paid him $60,000 per episode for the first three seasons. He earned $1.32 million for season one, $1.44 million for season two, and $1.68 million for season three.
Three years into the contract, Carey told reporters if ABC didn’t give him a raise, he would finish his term and move on. In 1998, his salary was increased to $300,000 per episode. He earned $4.8 million apiece for seasons four and five and $5.1 million for season six.
In 2001, Drew began earning $750,000 per episode. He earned $20.25 million for season seven and $19.5 million apiece for seasons eight and nine. In total, Carey was paid roughly $78.4 million for hosting The Drew Carey Show before future syndication profits are considered.
The Price Is Right Salary
When Carey first began hosting The Price Is Right in 2007, he received an estimated $9 million advance from the contract. In 2008, Forbes listed him among the world’s highest-paid television show hosts, earning $12 million. This indicates that he was earning $9 million/year from his new TPIR deal and $3 million from other endeavors, which include hosting the show Power of Ten.
Celebrity Net Worth lists his salary from The Price Is Right at $12.5 million. However, that figure is taken from a 2016 Forbes article, where Carey was again listed as one of the highest-paid television show hosts. Forbes typically estimates total earnings, but since Drew wasn’t working on any other shows then, his salary from CBS is likely close to this number.
It is unknown whether CBS is now paying Drew Carey more to host the show than he was eight years ago. If he currently earns $12.5 million annually, that would work out to roughly $65,800 per episode.
