Hardened Steel Hardened Steel

Unsure What You’re Up Against?

If you're not sure how hard the steel is, start with cobalt. If that fails, step up to TCT. And as always - if in doubt, ask us.

HSS & Cobalt

Cobalt drill bits are the best all-round choice for hardened or stainless steels. Made with 5% cobalt alloy for high heat resistance and longer edge retention. Run slow, use steady pressure, and keep the bit cool for best results. HSS drill bits are not recommended for hardened steel - most will burn out or fail quickly. Only use on very light-duty work or if drilling into already-softened edges.

TCT

Tungsten carbide-tipped bits for when cobalt isn’t enough. Ideal for extreme materials like high-tensile fasteners, hardened bolts, and heavy-duty security plates. Often used by locksmiths, fabricators, and engineers. Requires precision and care.
