What Are Regional Codes? DVD and Blu Ray discs contain Regional Codes which are used to prevent the playback of region coded discs outside the area they are made for. Various studios and home video companies lobbied to make sure this coding system was a required part of DVD and Blu Ray manufacturing standards. They did this as they wanted to control how their DVD and Blu Ray titles are exported to other countries. In most instances, discs manufactured in one region will play only on players that were manufactured for use in that same region. For example, discs bought or imported from Germany (coded for region 2 DVD and Blu Ray Region B) will not play on U.S. players (made to play only region 1 DVD and Blu Ray region A) and vice versa. How can I tell what region a DVD is? The Region Code is specified on the back of the individual DVD and Blu ray packaging and on the disc itself. It is shown with a globe that has a region number printed over it.

Region code Country/Area 0 Informal term meaning "playable in all regions". Region 0 discs will play on any DVD player. 1 Bermuda, Canada, United States and U.S. territories 2 The Middle East, Western Europe, Central Europe, Egypt, French overseas territories, Greenland, Japan, Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland 3 Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea and Taiwan 4 Australasia, Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Oceania, South America 5 The rest of Africa, Former Soviet Union, the Indian subcontinent, Mongolia, North Korea 6 Mainland China 8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.
