Dying Light 2 endings revolve around many different choices Aiden will have to make - both with what faction he decides to align with and who lives and dies. This page lays out all possible endings and how to obtain them, and many of them require you to make several specific choices.

Generally speaking, there are two major endings to Dying Light 2, based on your immediate choice during the final mission: Let the missiles get detonated and destroy X13, or stop Lawan from detonating them and let the missiles hit Villedor.

However, there are many other choices that can effect how those play out, and depending on which factions you sided with, who controls Villedor in the aftermath.

At a glance, these are the major ending differences:

Stay with Mia - Lawan detonates missiles and lives (if Hakon was not killed) Stay with Mia - Lawan detonates missiles and sacrifices herself (if Hakon was killed) Rescue Lawan - City is hit and half the population is killed

However, who controls the city and how you get to this point can differ depending on the major choices you make.

Hakon's Fate

Dying Light 2 Stay Human 20220208110249.jpg

Possibly one of the most important choices is one that happens very early is if you decide to help Hakon when he is ambushed near the end of the Old Villedor section. You won't know it then, but Hakon's disposition towards you will dictate if he can be talked down when you are forced to fight him later in the game.

If you help save Hakon, you'll immediately startSniper's Alley and preserve your friendship with him. That means during No Mercy/Deals with the Devil later in the game, he's open to not fighting you. Refuse to fight him, and tell Lawan to back down to save Hakon.

Keeping Hakon alive is essential if you want to save Lawan and get a better ending.

If you leave Hakon to die, he'll still stay alive for the time. However, during No Mercy/Deals with the Devil, he no longer trusts you. That means you'll have no option to talk him out of fighting and will be forced to kill him. he won't be able to help save Lawan at the end of theX13 quest, meaning she'll have to sacrifice herself.

As if there weren't enough variables at play, if you side with Juan Rainer during the Broadcast mission, the story beat where you meet Hakon again becomes a side quest. This means if you left him to die earlier, you can avoid forcing the confrontation. Hakon will appear during the X13 mission to fight you and will relent when he sees Lawan, and join your side.

Frank's Fate - Should You Save Frank?

Dying Light 2 Stay Human 20220201115228.jpg

Frank is another key character in the story in regards to what kind of endings you can get. If you don't side with Frank by giving him the transmitter access at the VNC Tower in the Broadcast mission, he'll be unable to radio for evacuations, and become mortally wounded trying to help survivors. This means the Nightrunners are never revived, and you're locked out of leaving the city with Lawan.

If you side with Frank, you'll still have to ensure he survives until the end of the game, by staying with him when he's struck by a poison arrow during the "Breakout" mission. Otherwise he'll still die while you're tracking down the truck.

Note that the option to save Frank during Breakthrough requires you to have saved Aitor during the "Aitor" side quest. Margaret the herbalist is the only one who can save Frank, and if Aitor dies, the PK murder her.

Frank's survival is key to the reformation of the Nightrunners and the Survivors becoming a dominant player in the epilogue.

Dying Light 2 X13 Choices

The final mission has its own set of complex questions, and the choices attached to them aren't as clear as you might think.

Save Lawan

No matter who you’ve sided with so far or who controls the radio tower, if you save Lawan, the missiles will destroy Villedor. This option also locks you out of the ending where Lawan leaves with Aiden

If you kept Hakon alive, he’ll leave the city with Aiden. If not, Aiden departs Villedor alone. Neither of these is ideal, considering how many people die.

Let Lawan Detonate the Bombs

This one is a bit more complicated, but it’s the better choice. Here’s how it plays out.

  • Hakon will save Lawan if he's alive, and the missiles won't destroy Villedor. If the Survivors control the broadcast and you saved Frank, Aiden and Lawan will leave Villedor together
  • If Hakon was alive, but you allied with the Peacekeepers or Juan, he’ll still save Lawan. However, she will not leave with Aiden, and, obviously, Frank will die as well.
  • If Hakon dies, there's no one to save Lawan. Villedor is still saved, but Aiden departs alone.

To simplify all this, if you want to leave with Lawan, you need to:

  • Keep Hakon alive
  • Save Frank
  • Let Lawan detonate the charges

Who Gets the City?

Dying Light 2 Stay Human 20220208111142.jpg

The choices you make will decide who is left to run Villedor when all is said and done, as Aiden will always leave the city and continue to wander - even if you save Mia. Whatever happens to her if you don't destroy X13 is unknown, as is the fate of Waltz. If you destroy X13, they'll die too.

Below is a known list of variations to how the epilogue can play out depending on your choices. Keep in mind that you can only associate with Juan if you side with him during the Welcome on Board story quest and then again during Broadcast. If you side with Jack Matt, you're locked out of any association with Juan.

  • Frank is alive, and leads the Survivors to control the city, as Jack Matt is ousted and replaced by Meyer (if you choose to believe the Colonel over Jack Matt). Aiden leaves with Lawan.
  • Frank is dead, and Jack Matt leads the Peacekeepers to control the city (if you choose to believe Jack Matt and kill Colonel Williams). Aiden leaves alone.
  • Juan Rainer controls the city, but hoards food supplies and hides himself in the PK floating fortress while survivors protest (If you sided with Juan and killed Colonel Williams).
  • Juan Ranier controls the city jointly with Williams - people still hate him (if you spared Williams)
  • The missiles hit the city and nobody ends up with major control of the Villedor (if Frank is killed and Juan isn't sided with either)

In addition there will be mentions of Old Villedor, but only if you sided with the Survivors. Doing so will cause Sophie to take over as leader of the Survivors there instead of Carl, and she is well liked in her role. However, if you sided with the Peacekeepers, the Bazaar is destroyed and its people are scattered.

Due to Aiden's worsening condition as an infected, he will always choose to head back to the open road, but depending on your choices and who survived, he may not travel alone. Making sure Frank survives will ensure Lawan isn't consumed by revenge and guilt, and will accompany Aiden. If you let the city be destroyed, she won't go with you, but Hakon will - if you didn't get him killed.
