Earth Day! How To Draw A Pine Tree + Hahnemühle Sketchbook Mini ...

Making trees look realistic is one of the biggest frustration among those in my drawing classes, so I hope this little video demo helps!

While this demo is in fountain pen, I think it illustrates the idea well for Copic and pencil artists too – making trees “imperfect” and varying branches so they look natural!

In the first 3 minutes I quickly talk about a few of my fountain pen sketchbooks – then the demo will start. Watch the video below or click HERE to see it on YouTube.

Here’s a downloadable version if you’d like to print it out and stick it in your sketchbook for reference. (I tape the end of things like this into a page so it doesn’t fall out!)

The Hahnemühle Lettering pads of bright white paper I’ve been drawing on for a while are excellent and come in a variety of sizes; I LOVE how smoothly my pen glides over the surface!

The Hahnemühle Nostaligie Book is on heavier paper, 90lb, and it can handle light washes from time to time – a nice option to have in a pad! As with all these sketchbooks it lies flat – though keeping a clip or a band handy may help to hold down a loose-flying page.

I picked up the large Hahnemühle Grey Book – a good size option!

The Rainbow journal by Shizen Design has paper that’s nice and smooth – but its thin like the Grey and Capuccino books, so it can’t handle super heavy inking. But oh what fun it is to have a rainbow!
