Scrunchie Pattern Instructions

Use a rotary cutter and mat to trim a 3.5 x 21″ fabric strip. Trim a 7-8″ strip of the elastic (or longer for thick hair). Scrunchie Pattern

Fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise, right sides facing. Press. Pin along the long raw edges.

Use the Frixion highlighter (I love these because the ink disappears when it is exposed to the heat of an iron, and they mark wonderfully on light and dark fabrics) and a seam gauge to make a small mark 1 1/2″ from each of the top left and right corners of the pinned piece.

Starting at the mark on the left-hand side, stitch using a 1/4″ seam allowance along the pinned edge of the fabric piece, stopping at the mark on the opposite side.

Secure a large safety pin through one open end of the piece, and use it to turn the tube right-side out.

Turn Tube Right Side out

Fold the tube in half and carefully align the open top and bottom edges.

Pin these edges together and then stitch them with a 1/4″ seam allowance to secure, as seen below. This will form your fabric tube into a ring with a 3″ opening along the outside edge.

Secure the safety pin through one end of the elastic piece. Thread the elastic through the open seam and all the way around the fabric ring. Remove the safety pin and overlap the raw ends of the elastic, stitching them together securely either by hand or with a machine.

Pinch the opening of the project closed so that the side seams are aligned, as shown. Pin the opening shut. Edge stitch 1/8″ from the edge of the opening to close.

Or, for an invisible seam, use my easy Ladder Stitch Tutorial to hand stitch the opening shut.
