Edd Gould was born on October 28, 1988, in Isleworth, England to mother Sue Gould.[1] He has a sister named Vicky and a brother named George.
Edd began drawing while attending Orleans Park School.[2] Edd met Matt Hargreaves at a sports day event, and eventually Matt was moved into Edd's class.[3] The two were both bullied, but they loved drawing. Later on, Edd started using a GIF maker he found on the school computers called The Complete Animator[4] to make animated GIFs about various things like "stickmen dying and farts". Edd never intended to put these creations online, until he discovered the website Stick Figure Death Theatre. Upon discovering they had started accepting Flash submissions instead of GIFs, he decided to look at a few and came across one titled Agent Smiley by animator Simon Stenhouse. Inspired, he got Macromedia Flash MX on November 7, 2002. He created and posted his first animation, Bendee Stick #1, on the same day.[3] In early-2003, he began using free web-hosting services to make his own websites to store these creations. Throughout 2003 and 2004, he would join various art and animation communities such as Newgrounds, DeviantArt, StickSuicide, Anitude, and Smosh.
Edd would go on to meet various friends through these communities over the next several years, most notably Thomas Ridgewell, Tord Larsson,[3][5] and Paul ter Voorde.[6] Edd officially established Eddsworld as a team in November 2004, inviting Tom and Tord to be the first members. He began production on the first Eddisode, Eddsworld Christmas Special, that same month. He joined SheezyArt in December 2005, and it quickly became his primary platform for posting art and animations.
Edd was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on January 28, 2006, announcing it 2 days later.[7] The cancer went into remission shortly before Edd started university.[8] He began attending the University for the Creative Arts in Maidstone, England, in September 2008.
In late-2008, Edd was invited to join CakeBomb, a collective of creatives founded by Tom and his friends from sixth form. He would remain in the group until it was dissolved at the end of 2010.
Throughout university, Edd would be approached by several individuals and companies about doing commissioned animation work. These animations included So Here's How It Went Down... and Nuts for Jonti Picking, Almeratron for the BBC, and Climate Change for tv/e. Edd also animated marmite is terrible, a video Tom was commissioned to make for Marmite's "love it or hate it" campaign.
Edd's leukemia returned in February 2011, shortly before he graduated from university.[8] According to Edd, this was possibly because he was being treated as a child during his initial treatments despite nearly being 18, hindering the effectiveness of the chemotherapy.[9] This diagnosis was revealed on April 16, 2011 in the video Edd vs Cancer. Edd's treatment was continuously stalled due to an aggressive and reoccurring infection. Whenever his body would fight it off, it would return shortly after.[8] The same infection nearly took his life in June 2011,[9][10] but he fought it off.
Edd appeared on-camera alongside Tom at the end of the short Fan Service, letting fans know that his next project would take a while to make because of his cancer treatment.
Edd's last on-camera appearance came on a Vokle livestream he hosted on February 19, 2012. His last animation, 5ever, was posted to Tumblr 4 days later. His last recorded online activity came when he logged into YouTube on March 21st.[11]

On Sunday, March 25, 2012, Edd Gould passed away due to complications of leukemia. Thomas Ridgewell and Matt Hargreaves announced Edd's passing on YouTube through the video RIP Edd Gould (1988-2012) (uploaded on March 27, 2012 at 23:08 (UTC))[12] and a tweet linking to it was posted to Edd's Twitter account (three minutes after the video's upload).[13]
Edd suddenly got sick when he was at home. He was watching Doctor Who at the time (an episode that was "funny"), and he got taken into the hospital, where things got "really bad really fast" and the doctors were telling Edd's mother that "he was done". They were going to give him a week. Thomas Ridgewell explained, "his body just kind of freaked out and he slipped away really, really quickly". Matt Hargreaves confirmed in 2013 that it was the reoccurring infection that ultimately led to his death.[8]
Eddsworld was spotlighted by YouTube on March 30 and many people, including popular Newgrounds users and YouTubers, have voiced their condolences.[14][15][16][17][18][19][20] Several people posted animations,[21][22] claymations,[23] and pictures in tribute to Edd.[24]
Edd Gould's funeral took place on April 10, 2012, at All Saints' Church in Isleworth, England.[25][26]
A share of Edd's ashes were given to Matt and Tom.[27][28][29] Edd's family buried theirs on Edd's 24th birthday, however, Matt spread his share at Griffith Park in Los Angeles and McGee's Bar in New York.[30] Tom put his share in a box-like urn with a black and white photo of him and Edd on it, taken in August 2007.[31]
