Mississippi’s most heated rivalry is headed back to Thanksgiving Day.

After a one-year move back to the following Saturday, the 2021 Egg Bowl will once again be played on the fourth Thursday in November at 6:30 p.m. despite initially being scheduled for Saturday, November 27th.

Sources have confirmed to me that the Egg Bowl will indeed move to Thanksgiving. @robbiefaulk247 had the initial report.

Both teams will have a short week of preparation ahead of the regular season finale in Starkville as the Rebels will face Vanderbilt at home the Saturday prior while the Bulldogs are set to face Tennessee State.

The last time Ole Miss and Mississippi State matched up on the holiday produced one of the more memorable moments in the series that dates back to 1901 as Rebel WR Elijah Moore’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty led to a missed Luke Logan extra point, a 21-20 victory for Mississippi State and the firing of Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke. The game also proved to be the final win at Mississippi State for Joe Moorhead, who was fired after the Bulldogs’ loss to Louisville in the Music City Bowl.

A year later, the first meeting between Lane Kiffin and Mike Leach was originally scheduled for Thanksgiving Day but was eventually pushed back to that Saturday when the revised slate was announced in the midst of the pandemic. Kiffin’s Rebels took the first meeting in Oxford by a 31-24 final score.

The official announcement from the schools also indicates that the 2022 Egg Bowl will also be played on Thanksgiving when the series shifts back to Oxford.
