- Eggs and a balanced diet
Our bodies require a broad range of different nutrients to stay healthy - these nutrients ensure we are able to carry out our basic functions to keep alive and well. A healthy diet can be achieved by consuming foods in their correct proportions and quantities which provide us with all the vital nutrients we need. The Eatwell plate illustrates how to get your proportions right for a healthy diet.
Eggs are a fundamental part of the Eatwell plate due to their high quality protein content. In fact, eggs are considered to be one of the highest forms of protein next to beef and cow’s milk. Discover more about protein in eggs at Egg Nutrition Information.
The eatwell plate shows how much of what you eat should come from each food group. This takes into account everything you eat during the day, including snacks.
So, try to eat:
- Plenty of fruit and vegetables
- Plenty of bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods – choose wholegrain varieties when you can
- Some milk and dairy foods
- Some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein
- Just a small amount of foods and drinks high in fat and/or sugar
Look at the eatwell plate to see how much of a whole day’s food should come from each food group and try to match this in your own diet.
Try to choose options that are lower in fat, salt and sugar when you can.
