When is Eid ul-Fitr 2026 in India?

We can expect Eid ul-Fitr in India to fall on or around Saturday, 21 March 2026, corresponding to 1 Shawwal 1447 AH. The final confirmation will be made locally in India by the Regional Ruet-e-Hilal Committees after Maghrib on the 29th of Ramadan, based on the sighting of the moon.

Astronomical forecasts suggest that the crescent moon will be widely visible across India on the evening of Friday, 20 March 2026. If the sighting is confirmed, Saturday, 21 March 2026, will most likely be declared as Eid ul-Fitr.

Eid ul-Fitr is also known as Eid al-Fitr, Eid ul-Fitr, Meethi Eid, or Choti Eid

Eid ul-Fitr in India

Eid marks the close of Ramadan and the start of Shawwal. In India, it blends shared Islamic practices with regional hues, family visits, hospitality, and sweets like sheer khurma. State and local bodies coordinate traffic and crowd management around major Eidgah grounds and mosques; check advisories issued near the day.

The night before Eid (Chaand Raat)

Markets in neighborhoods from Old Delhi to Hyderabad’s Charminar and Mumbai’s Mohammed Ali Road stay lively for last-minute shopping for clothes, bangles, and mehndi. Expect heavier traffic around popular bazaars and Eidgahs; local police and municipalities typically publish diversions and public-transport updates closer to the date.

Zakat al-fitr

  • Give before the Eid prayer so it reaches recipients in time.
  • Who sets amounts? India does not have a single nationwide government-fixed amount. Guidance is usually issued locally (e.g., by state Waqf Boards and mosque committees). Follow the channels where your city’s guidance is typically posted, e.g., the Telangana State Waqf Board, Maharashtra State Board of Waqf, or the Board of Auqaf, West Bengal. Pay in staple food or the equivalent amount in INR, as per local guidance.
  • If a 2026 figure has not yet been published for your city, consider using the early channels recommended by your local board or masjid.

Sunnah practices on Eid morning

A quick checklist many families in India follow:

  • Perform ghusl, wear clean or new clothes, and apply a light fragrance.
  • Eat something sweet (often dates) before prayer.
  • Exchange greetings, “Eid Mubarak,” as you meet neighbors and relatives.
  • Use side roads or public transport where possible to keep prayer-site walkways clear.

Eid salah and khutbah

  • Prayers take place shortly after sunrise on the 1st of Shawwal, followed by a brief khutbah. Timings vary by city and venue (Eidgah vs. mosque).
  • For official/local schedules and traffic plans, refer to the usual notice boards, including your city’s Waqf Board sites and civic/police channels.

Family and community customs

After prayer, families share festival breakfasts and begin rounds of visits. Children often receive eidi (small gifts or cash). Tables feature sheer khurma, regional biryanis, kebabs or roasted meats, and breads such as sheermal, alongside sweets from local mithai shops. Hosts commonly prioritize visits to elders first, then siblings, friends, and neighbors throughout the day.

Public celebrations

Large cities typically host community activities (fairs, cultural programs) led by municipal bodies or minority-welfare departments; exact line-ups are announced closer to the date on official city and tourism channels and amplified via PIB. Check your city’s government and Waqf Board pages during the last week of Ramadan

Openings and hours during Eid

Gazetted holiday: The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) has issued the 2026 Central Government holiday list, which includes Id-ul-Fitr (date subject to the moon sighting). State governments issue their own notifications for local offices and schools; private businesses may set separate hours.

How Eid feels in key cities

  • Delhi: Jama Masjid, Eidgahs in Delhi Gate and Okhla draw early crowds. Expect traffic controls around the Walled City and key prayer grounds; use Metro where possible.
  • Mumbai: Eidgahs in Bandra, Byculla, and South Mumbai witness large congregations; Mohammed Ali Road and Bohri Mohalla’s sweets shops become busy from late afternoon.
  • Hyderabad: The historic Makkah Masjid area and Mir Alam Eidgah host major prayers, with state coordination through the Telangana Waqf Board and city authorities.
  • Kolkata: Tents and overflow arrangements are in place near major mosques/Eidgahs. Monitor the Board of Auqaf, West Bengal, and city police advisories for crowd and traffic updates.

Visitor etiquette during Eid ul-Fitr

  • Dress modestly and follow the instructions of volunteers and officials at prayer sites.
  • Keep prayer areas and lanes clear; avoid taking photographs where prohibited.
  • Greet with “Eid Mubarak”; if visiting homes, carry small sweets as a gesture of goodwill.
  • If driving, respect road closures around Eidgahs and plan parking or public transport in advance.
