For lunch today, I decided to indulge in some Chinese. The meal was good, but it was the end of the meal that had me disturbed...

My fortune cookie was empty.

This has never happened to me before. I have had some strange fortunes come out of my fortune cookies ("You love Chinese food"), but never have I encountered an empty one.

When I told the young lady at the cash register about it, she told me that "over 99% of the cookies contain fortunes, so you are extra lucky, because you got one of the less than 1% that is empty."

Being the curious type, I decided to do some research on my own. According to Grub Street Boston "empty fortune cookies belong to the lucky", but according to Wiki Answers "you may have bad luck for the rest of your life".

urbandictionary.com shows "empty fortune cookie" as an adjective: 1) impotent, 2) a failure at life.

I can't help but recall an episode of "The Twilight Zone", where a gentleman continues to get great fortune cookies and they all come true...including his "final fortune".

I think I'll pay attention to the fortune I received when I last indulged on Chinese...

How true this is...
