An ester is the compound obtained when the hydrogen atom in at least one hydroxy group in an oxoacid or a hydroxoacid is replaced by an alkyl group (alkyl ester) or an aryl group (aryl ester). In an ester molecule, the bond connecting the atom doubly bonded to oxygen and the oxygen atom bearing the alkyl or aryl group is called the ester bond or, in biochemistry, ester linkage.
