Summary

  • Ryan Reynolds is busy with upcoming films like Deadpool 3 and two sequels to his hit 2021 Netflix action comedy film Red Notice.
  • Deadpool & Wolverine marks Reynolds' first appearance as Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • Reynolds' other future projects include Animal Friends, Mayday, Boy Band, Calamity Hustle, and Dragon's Lair: The Movie.

Based on his upcoming film schedule, Ryan Reynolds is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, as he has numerous sequels and original projects in the works. Reynolds has appeared in multiple good and bad movies over the course of his career. However, the renowned actor never fails to entertain audiences with his comedic and action roles, from starring as the titular character in Deadpool to playing a billionaire vigilante in 6 Underground. Reynolds has also stepped behind the camera as the producer and writer of a handful of films (some that he even appears in).

One of Reynolds' most highly anticipated future movies is Deadpool 3 — aka, Deadpool & Wolverine — the third installment in the Deadpool film series. After several delays, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie will finally debut in 2024. However, aside from big-name projects like Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds has many other exciting films to come, including a live-action/animated action comedy and a sequel to his hit 2021 Netflix movie.

As mentioned above, Deadpool & Wolverine is one of Ryan Reynolds' biggest upcoming projects, seeing as it's the second sequel to the widely successful 2016 film Deadpool. But it's also significant because it marks Wade Wilson's (and Wolverine's) introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The 2024 superhero movie will also, thankfully, be the MCU's first R-rated project (some were worried that the IP's transition to the MCU would take away its brutality and vulgarity).

Although not much is known about Deadpool & Wolverine's story (which is a good thing), the trailer reveals that the Tim Variance Authority (TVA) from Loki on Disney+ plays a role. The TVA, led by Matthew Macfadyen's Paradox, pulls Wade from his life to send him on a mission, where he encounters Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine. Hopefully, the Phase Five movie lives up to the hype and contains many exciting surprises that set the MCU on a better path as it is the only MCU film premiering in 2024.

Wolverine is able to appear in the third Deadpool film because Disney (which owns Marvel Studios) acquired 21st Century Fox (which owned the rights to the X-Men) in 2019.

Animal Friends (August 15, 2025)

Directed By Peter Atencio

Ryan Reynolds is set to star in Animal Friends, an upcoming live-action/animated action comedy film that is scheduled to debut on the big screen on August 15, 2025. Peter Atencio is directing the movie, while Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider wrote the script, which the contents of are mostly unknown (including Reynolds' character) as of the writing of the article. However, Animal Friends is described as an R-rated road trip comedy and features an all-star cast.

Mayday, directed and written by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, is an action-adventure movie starring Ryan Reynolds as an unknown character alongside Kenneth Branagh, Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński, Lovell Adams-Gray, Clark Johnson, and Alex Mallari Jr. Like many of Reynolds' other upcoming films, the release date and story of Mayday are unknown, but the cast and crew began principal photography in March 2024 and wrapped in early June. Consequently, a 2025 premiere might be in the cards for Reynolds' action-adventure flick.

Mayday is expected to debut on Apple TV+.

Everyday Parenting Tips (TBA)

Directed By Paul King

Ryan Reynolds

Per Variety, Ryan Reynolds was cast in the lead role in the monster movie Everyday Parenting Tips, but his casting announcement was released in August 2020 and there have been no updates on the film since then. So, Everyday Parenting Tips' status is unclear, but it is still listed as one of Reynolds' upcoming projects on his IMDb page. Everyday Parenting Tips is based on Simon Rich's New Yorker short story of the same name. Meanwhile, Reynolds is set to play a father struggling to raise his kids in a world that has been taken over by monsters.

Red Notice is a film franchise created for Netflix by Rawson Marshall Thurber that stars Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne Johnson as the core cast of characters. The series centers around the trio, consisting of an FBI agent, an art thief, and a bandit of international renown that find themselves linked together in a series of comedic, action-packed events.

Following the massive achievement of Red Notice becoming Netflix's most popular movie ever, the streaming service ordered two sequels — Red Notice 2 and Red Notice 3, scheduled to be filmed back-to-back. The upcoming action comedy films will feature the return of original Red Notice cast members Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson. Rawson Marshall Thurber will also return as the director and writer of the sequels, and the filmmaker has already finished the script for Red Notice 2 and is reportedly working on the third. Unfortunately, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023 delayed production on the sequels.

Ryan Reynolds will reunite with director Shawn Levy on the set of Paramount's comedy feature Boy Band. The duo previously worked on The Adam Project, Free Guy, and Deadpool & Wolverine together. Reynolds, who wrote the script for the boy band reunion film alongside Jesse Andrews, will star in and produce the movie. Boy Band's filming schedule is unclear, as both Reynolds and Levy are quite busy with other projects, but the movie has been confirmed, so hopefully, it will premiere sooner rather than later.

Calamity Hustle (TBA)

Directed By Aaron & Adam Nee

Channing Tatum in Free Guy

Another of Ryan Reynolds' upcoming films is the Warner Bros. action comedy Calamity Hustle, directed and written by Aaron and Adam Nee. Per Deadline, the movie is said to have a similar tone to Lethal Weapon and the hope is that the first film will launch an action franchise. Reynolds' character in Calamity Hustle is a cop, while Channing Tatum is set to play his estranged brother who happens to be a low-level criminal. Meanwhile, the story launches when Tatum's character is implicated in a diamond heist, which will take place around the holiday season.

Principal photography for Calamity Hustle is set to occur in New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, but a filming schedule is unknown.

Ryan Reynolds is producing and starring in a live-action version of the popular video game franchise Dragon's Lair for Netflix. Reynolds hopes to change Hollywood with Dragon's Lair: The Movie with its scope and innovative technology, but the latest update on the project came in November 2022, so its status is unclear. Nevertheless, Dragon's Lair was originally released in 1983 and is known for its superior graphics, rapid-fire, choice-based gameplay, and infamous difficulty. The Netflix adaptation will follow Reynolds' Dirk the Daring, a heroic knight trying to rescue a princess from an evil dragon and a wizard.

Free Guy 2 (TBA)

Directed By Shawn Levy

Following the success of the 2021 action comedy Free Guy, Disney wanted to keep the ball rolling with a sequel. However, Shawn Levy didn't confirm that the rumored sequel was in the works until November 2023, when the director announced they were trying to write a worthy script (via Parade). However, Levy made sure to emphasize that Disney had not greenlit Free Guy 2 yet, as the script is still being worked on. Consequently, it might be a long time until Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as Guy in the Free Guy sequel (if it is confirmed and not ultimately scrapped).

Free Guy received an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022 but lost to Dune.

Will Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool Be In Avengers 5?

The Avengers 5 Cast Isn't Confirmed

Wade Wilson will be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Deadpool & Wolverine, which implies that Deadpool could team up with other iconic superheroes (or anti-heroes) in future movies following its premiere in July 2024. However, with all the changes surrounding Avengers 5 after Jonathan Majors' firing, it's unclear who will star in the next Avengers film, aside from Benedict Cumberbatch, who previously confirmed his appearance as Doctor Strange. One rumor claims that Avengers 5 will feature 60 returning characters, and if that's true, Ryan Reynolds will likely be a part of that gigantic cast.

After Destin Daniel Cretton exited Avengers 5, reports claim that Marvel is eyeing Shawn Levy, who directed Deadpool & Wolverine, to helm the upcoming Avengers project, further suggesting that Deadpool will appear.
