How Titanfall 2 went from rumor to reality.
By Seth G. MacyUpdated: Oct 19, 2016 12:47 amPosted: Oct 18, 2016 4:39 pmTitanfall was one of the Xbox One's early successes, launching to solid reviews and player enthusiasm. The parkour-and-mechs twist on the competitive multiplayer shooter worked great, and a sequel seemed like a forgone conclusion. It's been quite some time since the first rumblings of Titanfall 2 began to surface, and Respawn Entertainment's follow-up is almost upon us. From the early rumors of a multi-platform release, to the confirmation of a single-player campaign, all the way up to the special Buffalo Wild Wings promotion (yup), here's everything you need to know about Titanfall 2.
Titanfall 2 Finds a Publisher
Less than a week after the original game released, rumors of a Titanfall 2 publishing partner began churning. The EA rumors would later be confirmed. Since EA published the first Titanfall, it made sense for it to link up with Respawn to publish the sequel.
Multi-Platform Rumors
View 49 ImagesFollowing on the heels of the publisher rumors, word spread Titanfall 2 wouldn't be Xbox One exclusive. While original Titanfall had always been planned as an Xbox One exclusive, nothing about its sequel had been set in stone, at least at such an early stage.
EA and Respawn Make it Official
Back in May 2014, EA and Respawn announced they'd be working together on "new Titanfall experiences," but didn't explicitly mention a sequel. Instead, a broader concept was initially announced to cover all sorts of Titanfall properties, from new maps to the eventual sequel, to mobile tie-ins.
Multiple Platforms (Almost) Confirmed
While reports had already come out putting Titanfall 2 on PS4, neither EA nor Respawn had come out and admitted it. In February of 2015, EA suggested a possible sequel would have a "bigger footprint" than Xbox One. The suggestion was merely early hints at what was to come, since Titanfall 2 still hadn't even been officially announced.
Titanfall 2 Officially Announced
Finally, in March 2015, EA and Respawn officially announced Titanfall 2. Along with the announcement came the confirmation the game would also come to PS4. While the sequel was finally confirmed, big details, like a single-player campaign, were still unknown.
Release Window Revealed
During EA's quarterly investors' meeting in May 2015, the company gave the first info about a Titanfall 2 release window. Speaking to its investors, EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said Titanfall 2 would be released between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017.
Titanfall 2 Misses E3 2015
The existence of Titanfall 2 was confirmed, it was coming to multiple platforms, and we had a release window. The next step naturally felt like it would be an E3 showing. But unfortunately that wasn't the case. At least, it wasn't the case in 2015. Titanfall 2 didn't come to E3 2015, with Respawn's Vince Zampella confirming its absence on his Twitter account.
Single-Player Campaign Confirmation
One problem many players cited with the original Titanfall was its lack of a single-player campaign. Hopeful gamers and rumor-mongers alike expected Titanfall 2 to have a single-player campaign, but until February 2016, it was still only a rumor. The confirmation came by way of an interview with lead writer Jesse Stern, who also said the game takes place in a world "grounded, dirty, and real."
Titanfall 2 Toys Coming Along With the Game
In February, McFarlane Toys added a section for Titanfall 2 toys to its website, hinting at a more precise release window for the game. Touted as arriving alongside the game in winter 2016, the McFarlane Toys Titanfall 2 figures looked like they might have spilled the beans on the game's release. However, a statement from EA confirmed the release date of the toys while reiterating it hadn't yet announced a release date for the game.
An Announcement About an Announcement
In April 2016, Respawn released a new teaser for Titanfall 2 promising some sort of announcement would be made June 12. The teaser also showed off mech sword. MECH SWORDS! The June 12 date put it perfectly in line with EA's E3 2016 event, EA Play.
Pre-E3 Leaks Show Off Grappling Hooks
Information relating to Titanfall 2 was leaked on Reddit. While the post on the Titanfall subreddit was quickly deleted, the internet forgets nothing and the info was preserved by NeoGAF. In the leak, we got the closest thing yet to a proper release date with an supposed October release. The leak also revealed new gameplay features, such as the grappling hook and bigger multiplayer maps.
E3 Brings an Official Release Date Announcement
Finally, after all the leaks, broad announcements, and rumors, EA officially revealed the October 28 Titanfall 2 release date. But the confirmation came after one final leak, as the trailer for Titanfall 2 got out before EA's official press conference. The trailer showed off Jack Cooper, the main character in the single-player campaign, along with his mech companion.
Titanfall 2 Collector's Edition Announced
Serious collectors and hardcore Titanfall fans were excited to see the announcement of the Titanfall 2 Collector's Edition during E3. On top of the game itself, the $250 USD edition includes an 8GB dog tag flash drive, an aluminum-cased field journal, and a 1:1 scale Titanfall 2 Vanguard pilot helmet replica, with a light-up faceplate and tactical accessories like a spotlight and laser sight.

Our First Impressions of Titanfall 2 Multiplayer
We finally got to play Titanfall 2 multiplayer at E3 2016, and it could only be described as "fire." Four rounds of the new Bounty Hunt mode in the Boomtown map showed off Respawn's goal of making the multiplayer less "lone wolf-y." Friendly Titans can be healed or powered up by giving them batteries extracted from foes. We also found the new grappling hook to be a satisfying mechanic, with a nice weight and momentum behind it.
Post-Release Multiplayer Maps Will Be Free
Also during E3, Respawn Entertainment head of development David Wightman revealed all Titanfall 2 post-launch maps and modes will be free. Wright also said there won't be any "pay to win" DLC for Titanfall 2 multiplayer during the EA Play event that took place in London during E3.
First Look at the Titanfall 2 Toys
While we already learned McFarlane Toys was handling the toy line for Titanfall 2, until E3 we hadn't gotten a chance to see the figures in anything other than promotional photos. The figures include a 7-inch Jack Cooper, along with a 10-inch figure of BT-7274, the mech linked to Cooper in the story mode. The Titanfall 2 McFarlane Toys figures are incredibly detailed and will launch alongside the game.

Titanfall 2 Single Player Is Surpising
We already knew some details about the single-player campaign in Titanfall 2, but in August we got to try it out for ourselves. After crashing on a jungle planet, Jack Cooper and BT-7274 form an unlikely bond, setting the stage for the unfolding story.
Multiplayer Technical Test Detailed
At Gamescom in Germany, EA and Respawn revealed details of the upcoming Titanfall 2 technical test, including dates, modes, and platforms. The first weekend test let players try their hand at 5v5 mode Bounty Hunt, or 8v8 mode Pilots vs. Pilots. The second weekend of testing added a 6v6 mode called Amped Hardpoint.
Post-Technical Test, Respawn Makes Changes
The first August technical test for multiplayer yielded valuable information for Respawn Entertainment. Changes to Titanfall 2 multiplayer were made in direct response to fan-feedback from the first test, including adjustments to Pilot speed, wall-run chaining, and more.
No EA Access or Origin Free Trial
As we entered the home stretch leading up to the official Titanfall 2 release, EA announced the game would be excluded from EA Access and Origin. That means no free trial for the game, nor will members to either service enjoy a discount on the full game when it's available. Respawn said it might be added in the future, but for the launch at least, Titanfall 2 won't have a free trial like other EA games.
Even More Titanfall 2 Toys Shown Off
Titanfall 2's JesterMcFarlane Toys showed off two more Titanfall 2 figures, sculpted directly from the 3D models in-game, giving them "unparalleled McFarlane detail." Both figures are due next year at a cost of $20 and are part of McFarlane Toys' Color Tops collectors' line.
Eat Wings, Get Titanfall 2 Exclusives
Given Titanfall 2's AAA pedigree, brand partnerships are perhaps unsurprising. However, it's somewhat rare to enjoy the flavor of a wings platter and earn access to a multiplayer mode for Titanfall 2, but the Titanfall 2/Buffalo Wild Wings promotion promised just that. Similar to a Doritos and Mountain Dew promotion, diners at Buffalo Wild Wings can earn access to a 1v1 mode called Coliseum, along with a Titan insignia. EA clarified Coliseum tickets can also be earned in-game by playing multiplayer, but that may leave players hungry and without a spicy residue on their fingers.
The First 3 Hours Are Intense
After we went hands-on with Titanfall 2 at the end of September, we came away knowing one thing for certain: Titanfall 2 keeps you on your toes. The slice we tried avoided the predictable shooter loop. In just a matter of minutes, we went from feeling like an unstoppable 20-foot-tall Titan of death, to feeling like a tiny human in a 20-foot-long metal casket.
Big Changes From Titanfall to Titanfall 2
There are 7 big differences between Titanfall and Titanfall 2. Double the number of available Titan chassis, changes to how Titans spawn, new Pilot classes and abilities, and more. Some of the changes came about as result of feedback from the Titanfall 2 technical tests.Titanfall 2 is almost here - it launched worldwide on PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One next Friday, October 28.
