Have you ever scalded your tongue?
Have you ever sipped hot coffee or tea in a hurry and scalded your tongue in the process? We are sure you might have. Burning of the tongue is a very common thing and we all face this. We all have sometime or other scalded our tongue while drinking a cup of hot, tea, coffee, soup or food. And it is quite painful and the discomfort is unbearable. There are two types of tongue burn- chemical or heat burn. Heat burns basically happen when you consume something hot and chemical burn takes place when you come in contact with some caustic or dangerous chemicals. Both the burns are different and should be treated differently. Here are some simple home remedies to get relief from heat burns:

Have ice-cream or place some ice
Having something cool or placing some ice on your burn will give you instant relief and reduce inflammation. The cold will soothe the burning tongue and prevent its tissue from further damage. It will also hydrate and moisten your mouth. Pop a cube of ice in your mouth or have some ice cream. You can also drink some juice or cold water for comfort.

Honey
Honey contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to soothe the burning sensation. Put a spoonful of honey in your mouth and let it sit for a while before swallowing it. Repeat this two-three times for instant relief. But you should avoid giving honey to children below 12 months as it can be dangerous to them.

Yogurt
This fermented milk product is one of the best home remedies to treat a burnt tongue. It has both a soothing and cooling effect. Eat a spoonful of yogurt immediately after you have burnt your tongue. Have a spoonful of yogurt and keep it on your tongue for a few minutes before swallowing it.

Sugar
Sprinkle some sugar on your tongue and let it dissolve. Once the sugar sits on your tongue, the pain will automatically go away. The sugar remedy will also boost your impaired sense of taste.

Aloe vera
Aloe vera is a popular home remedy to treat different types of burns and injuries. Apply some pure aloe gel (extracted from the leaves) on your tongue and the pain will go away instantly. Aloe vera gel soothes the damaged cells and reduces the pain and inflammation. A study published in 2007 suggested that aloe vera gel can be used to treat both first and second-degree burns.

Mint
Mint is packed with menthol, which can numb the area of your burn and decrease inflammation. It is known for its antibacterial properties which can prevent the area from further damage. You can apply mint toothpaste onto your burn or can either sip cooled down mint tea or chew mint gum.

-Do not consume hot liquid as it may irritate your burn.
-Avoid acidic foods and citrus fruits.
- Stay away from spicy foods as they cause irritation.
- Take good care of your oral hygiene.
- In case you do not get any relief, consult your doctor
