white4761 W Ok do we have any Exhaust shop employees in the house? I have a question about my set-up that might also help some other Teg owners out there. Yes I have a Turbo'd Teg, just check out the profile, but my specific question is about my Del-Slow (though this question should fit Teg needs as well). Where is the optimal place to weld my resonator? I've got my B16a Del-Slow that Im putting exhaust on. I picked up a Megan 4-1 GSR header (2.5" Collector), I am not going to run a CAT, I picked up a Vibrant Resonator (12" long x 3" inlet/outlet), I picked up a Kteller 3" stainless mandral "weld it yourself Del-Slow kit", and I picked up a Megan burnt tip muffler (3" inlet/outlet). Im going turbo with the del-slow soon, so please the exhaust diameter isn't debatable here, I just want to know; since I can choose anywhere along my exhaust system to place the resonator, where might it sound the best? Of course I could put the resonator in place of the CAT. There isn't alot of information about where to place a resonator because most people buy an aftermarket exhaust where the manufacturer chose where to put it for you. Anyway, putting the resonator in place of the CAT, seems like the heat from the header might burn out the resonator prematurely. But what would the exhaust system be louder (in-cab) with the resonator directly after the header, or might the In-Cab noise be lower? Keep in mind that I can place this resonator vertually anywhere... So what would the system sound like (in-cab) if I put the resonator directly in-between the header collector and the muffler (with equil piping length in-between)? Lastly, how would the sound change if I put the resonator as far back toward the muffler as possible? I would immagine that the resonator would last the longest back here, but I'd like to atleast hear myself think In-cab. I came to the TEG owners for this question because we have some good information floating around this site, and who knows what type of answer I'd get from Del-Slow owners lol... And hopefully other TEG owners who want to piece together their own exhaust, will learn from the replys given here. #1 · May 26, 2010 Ok do we have any Exhaust shop employees in the house? Is the bigger anf longer the reason the more queit your car will be? or the shorter and smaller sized be more quiet? and will resonator reduce performance? #4 · Apr 9, 2011

The bigger the diameter the higher capacity for flow and sound. The longer the chamber the quieter it can be. Depending on what product you buy, some companies, like magnaflow, make different size chamber resonators. This means that you could have a traditional 2.5" in/out resonator, a 2.5" that shrinks the chamber to 2 or 2.25" and the exits back at 2.5", or a 2.5" that expands the chamber to say 3" and then exits back at 2.5". If the chamber shrinks the exhaust flow is sped up and forced threw parts of the perforated tube reducing noise. In the expanded the flow is slowed and has less turbulence from the perforated tube and tends to be louder. 0 Reply #3 · Apr 9, 2011 I've worked at a custom exhaust shop for about 5 years. The short answer, its not going to matter where you put the resonator, especially a 3" that is only 12" long. Just to let you know, without a cat and 3" piping its going to be loud and raspy as all hell. On the other hand, when you do get the turbo on there they sound great considering that the turbo settles alot of exhaust noise. The best place to put a resonator is where you can tuck it up the highest to the car to avoid scraping, so usually where the stock one fits. The placement of the resonator wont reduce the noise as much as the packing of the resonator will. A lot of people buy generic exhaust systems and mufflers, or ebay junk, that look alright or fit fine, but when it come to expansion style mufflers the more solid they are the quieter. If you flick the body of the resonator and it "rings" or holds a tone, its will do little for the exhaust noise. A good resonator sound sound "full" or packed tightly with material. For example, if you flick the body it should make more of a "thunk" and that be the end of the noise. Until you get that turbo on there, your gonna have a hard time hearing yourself think when you driving. Insert Quotes Post Reply
