    Explained: swear jar meme

    • The swear jar meme is a chiefly image-based meme.
    • The swear jar is a tool used to discourage people from swearing. The practice is for the one who swears to pay a “fine” which is collected in the swear jar.
    • In this meme, an image with two jars is presented. One jar, which is typically labelled as the “SWEAR JAR”, has several coins in it. In contrast, the other jar, which has varying labels that riff on the idea of a swear jar, is completely full of coins.
    • This meme appears to have been popularised by a post made by Tumblr user @secret-knight. On 30 June 2017, the user posted an image comparing a relatively empty swear jar to a full “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure reference jar”.
    • The meme subsequently became well-circulated by mid-July 2017, appearing on other social media platforms.
    • On 4 July 2017, a post was submitted to the subreddit r/MemeEconomy making reference to the meme.
    • EDIT (31 Jul 2017): To clarify, the joke of comparing two jars (with one of them being a relatively empty swear jar) has been around for a while. For example, a discussion on TV Tropes from 2011 includes a drawing of a swear jar and a “Monty Python Reference Jar”. However, only now has this become a popular meme.
