Lake Tahoe is the highest alpine lake in the U.S. and the 16th deepest and second largest alpine lake in the world! Commonly referred to as "Tahoe", or just "The Lake" by locals, beautiful blue Lake Tahoe is located in the Sierra Nevada between the great states of California and Nevada in the United States of America.

The Lake Tahoe region includes the cities and towns of Tahoe City, Incline Village, Truckee, Kings Beach, Squaw (Olympic) Valley, Alpine Meadows, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Vista, Carnelian Bay, Crystal Bay, Brockway, Homewood, Tahoma, Meeks Bay, Meyers, Stateline, Northstar, and Zephyr Cove.

How big is Lake Tahoe? Lake Tahoe has a surface elevation of 6,229 ft (1898 m), is 22 miles long (35 km), 12 miles wide (19 km), has a shoreline 72 miles (116 km) in length and a surface area of 191 sq miles (496 km).

How deep is Lake Tahoe and how much water does it hold? With a lake surface area of 191 square miles (122,200 acres and 496 km), a maximum depth of over 1,600 feet (over 450 m), an average depth of 989 feet, a mean depth of 984 feet (300 m), and the total capacity of Lake Tahoe is 122,160,280 acre-ft (39 trillion gallons) of water!! Its deepest points are in Crystal Bay at 1,637 ft (499 m) and off Rubicon Point (1,645 ft, 501 m). Surface lake temperatures range from 68 ° F in the summer, to 41 ° F during the winter. The only outlet is the Truckee River at Tahoe City. The Lake boasts some beautiful fish including Sockeye salmon, Rainbow trout, Brown trout, Mosquitofish and others.

Summer fun on the Truckee River

Commercial rafting starts Memorial Day weekend and ends on Labor Day.

The Truckee River's release rate is approx. 50+cfs as the current lake level matches the natural rim altitude within .04 feet. Rafting from Tahoe City to the River Ranch is halted when the flow rate exceeds 900cfs. Flow rates in excess of 1205cfs signal a halt to all traffic, navigation of the river is illegal from Tahoe City to the River Ranch.
