Two Colorado Springs tutoring centers abruptly closed their doors last week without warning, leaving many families without their money.

The Sylvan Learning Center locations were owned by a pair of franchisers. Both locations shut down for financial reasons, and one of the owners confirmed with 11 News he is filing for bankruptcy.

But now many families they once served are left on the hook for services they will never get.

Because the Sylvan Learning Centers are franchises, the company is trying to do what it can to help those who pre-paid, including offering their Lone Tree office to help out people in the Springs. But it's an offer that doesn't work for every family.

"It doesn't work for most folks in Colorado Springs, but I already commute from Pueblo," said Karla Seilheiner-Sanchez.

Seilheiner-Sanchez is one of the parents left holding onto a hefty loan in the wake of the tutoring centers shuttering.

"I could file bankruptcy too I suppose because I can't pull $6,000 out of my -- you know."

She reached out to 11 Call For Action, unsure what to do about the $6,000 loan she took out for her daughter's classes.

"My husband and I are just trying to do the best thing for our daughter. To give her an education that she can thrive on and be competitive with, and then we are out the money because somebody decides he is going to file bankruptcy," she told 11 News.

After our Call For Action team talked with the lending company Seilheiner-Sanchez owed money to, they agreed to wipe her debt.

For those families who, like Seilheiner-Sanchez, took out a loan, contact Sylvan's lending partner Lending Point to find out what your options are.

Families who paid in cash will have to get in touch directly with the franchise owners, Kiel Asensi and Jeffrey Destache.

Sylvan's corporate office is also considering sending a teacher to the Springs for all the families who can't travel north. We will provide updates as we learn more.
