There was a time when Krishna Kulal’s organic garden would be ripped apart daily by wild pigs. But that is a thing of the past after the wily farmer from Bandasale village in Udupi district came up with an earthy solution to keep the animals away.

His weapon of choice is unconventional, to say the least: urine.

Kulal, who has studied up to Std VII, and his wife Jyothi grow coconut, arecanut, plantain, pepper, paddy and vegetables on their land.

They are also into dairy farming, apiculture and poultry farming.

In fact, Jyothi had won the best female farmer award for 2008-09 from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore.

Before he came up with this solution, the pigs were rummaging through the compost and also destroying the crop on their 4.5 acre plot of agriculture land.

“I took a used water bottle, drilled two small holes before filling it with urine and hanging it on the branch of a tree. The urine would trickle down in drops and wet the ground. Pigs would sniff the urine and retreat thinking that humans are around. I have not had any pig problem for the last five years,” said Kulal.

The 38-year-old won the third prize at the recent 2011-12 Krishi Pandit awards.

Though there is no scientific backing for using human urine as a pig-repellant, there have been instances of the same method being used in Malaysia to keep wild pigs at bay.

In a few countries, human urine and hair are used to ward off deer which would stray into farms.
