AboutSong Bio3 contributors

Fastball lead singer Tony Scalzo developed the inspiration for “The Way” after reading articles about an elderly couple from Salado, Texas who left home in June of 1997 to attend the Pioneer Day Festival in Temple, Texas and were discovered deceased at the bottom of a ravine near Hot Springs, Arkansas two weeks later.

In 2022, Scalzo told ForenSeek:

In retrospect, it had a darkly romantic quality to it. They had only disappeared at this point but I had the feeling they were not going to be found alive, as they had been gone a significant amount of days. I feel lucky to have latched on to it at that moment but I don’t know why I did.

“The Way” peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart in 1998, and topped Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart for seven weeks.
