Member Oct 25, 2017 26,759 According to FedEx, "In Transit" means the following:
In transit means that your package is on its way to its final destination. It does not necessarily mean that your package is in a moving vehicle such as an aircraft or truck. It may be at a FedEx facility. Click to expand... Click to shrink...
FedEx | System Down Even worse is FedEx customer service has no idea where a package is either when it is in transit since all they know is what the tracking info tells them which seems pretty useless since anyone can tell that from looking at their own tracking number. I have two packages in limbo from FedEx. 1) The first package was sent on Dec. 5th from San Leandro to San Jose. For those not familiar with the geography, it's not very far. It's a 35 min drive heading south on the freeway. One would think it would arrive the next day since it was shipped local. Nope, for some reason they routed it to Tracy which is a 45 min drive East, so totally out of the way. It arrived there on the 6th, and then quicklly Departed about an hour later. From the 7th to the 11th it was stuck "In Transit" with up to two updates a day with that status but then after the 11th, it went silent. 2) The second package was shipped out of Kentucky on Nov 29th and was making regular progress until it hit Sacramento on the 7th, which the last notable update was it departed from there. Again for those who don't know the geography, Sacramento is a two hour drive away. So from 8th through today, I've had multiple updates a day of it being "In Transit". I can't tell what's worse, one that it somehow getting updated being only "In Transit" or the one that went dark suddenly. I also cannot recall ever having such problems from a shipping company other than Amazon Logistics and even those don't happen anymore as their problems likely stemmed from when they were still ramping up their courier service. Usually if there's a shipping problem, it's maybe delayed by a day. On the extremely rare occasion a package goes missing, but I've never had two packages in limbo at the same time even factoring in the holiday craziness. Every other shipping company has been more or less reliable this holiday season except FedEx and when I decided to look more in to it, I see that meaningless status definition and find it pretty annoying that is how they define it. I wonder if FedEx is going to be hurting a bit after this holiday season as it seemed like a lot of retailers put their eggs in FedEx's basket this year compared to the past, and they dropped it compared to everyone else. Just had to vent a bit after finding that official definition and knowing that Analogue is shipping all their Analogue Pocket systems via FedEx starting today. Jeff Vader

....you just put a damper on my day :( Had no idea it would be through FedEx... FedEx must be pennies to get from, knowing how poorly they've been run lately (and I've been complaining about it non-stop). Maybe one day they will realize they shouldn't just use contract workers, but we shall see.... Just called Gamestop too today, since they almost exclusively use FedEx. Ordered something that was "shipped" on Nov 24th (aka a label was printed) and STILL no movement. Are they waiting for FedEx to get it? Did it get picked up and never scanned? Who knows!! It's FedEx!! Bionic

Bionic

Member Oct 27, 2017 908 One that went dark suddenly is worse. In Transit means it's getting scanned. That means they have and know where the package is. I've had USPS, FedEx, UPS, Amazon, OnTrac, all of 'em show their own version of "We still have it, but it's not doing anything". I drastically prefer seeing that twice a day to not having an update for 3+ days (or Amazon's "uhh it might be lost, come back in two days to tell us if you still haven't gotten it"). If you're worried it's lost, you can call to have them investigate. OP OP Darknight

That was my fear. I was hopeful that the fact that it stopped doing daily updates was that it finally had moved for a change instead of being in limbo. I don't get how their scanning works either. Are they scanning based off a trailer/truck if it's packed in one and just sitting? Are they scanning every package multiple times a day? That seems unlikely. I'm just trying to understand what happens when it goes from Departed to In Transit but then there's no movement.

I'm less worried now than I was before since one of the two was a Christmas gift and it's sold out just about everywhere online and most stores around me. I fortunately found one about a 50 min drive away and since I had to go up in that direction for something else, I went a bit further to snag one just to secure it and work out the mess later. The other one I know is easily replaceable so if it's lost then it'll get another one shipped. Surprisingly I figure they would lose the small package rather than the bigger one but it's the bigger one that went dark. At this point, I'm just curious to see if FedEx can ever sort it out but still concerned that they're handling the Analogue Pockets. MegaManTrigger

Fed Ex is definitely the worst option. I got two OLED Switches from Walmart. Both were "delivered" yesterday and signed for by "CCOVID". I looked around my porch and property and couldn't find them. I've seen a lot of places sign things as "COVID" cause of distancing stuff, so it's not really required, but if the stores they were sourced from are like "hey it's not our problem!" I mean, there needs to be some accountability :/ At least you got them, though. Biske

It's not a regional issue. FedEx was hit hard by the pandemic and shortages of workers and never recovered. On top of that, it seemed like they took on a lot of retailer contracts which was problematic because of all their bottlenecks. Normally, issues are localized and regional, but this seems to be network wide for them. That's not to say they don't deliver anything on time, but on average they seem to be a lot worse this year when it comes to delays. Baked Pigeon

At least they let you get it. Once my SO had a package sitting just 1 town over, and it was "scheduled for delivery" for like, specifically 3 days from then. "Can I pick it up at the store now if I come over?" "no". So, had to wait it out cause there was no other option :/ Walter White Walker

Agree with this. It was somewhat better before but I am legit afraid to order anything right now. But its all shipping right now, even tho FedEx seems to be the worse: Just had to update my address with UPS because somehow the order was missing the apt number...an order thru Amazon. Will have to get a refund for some paper plates I ordered from...yup Amazon. Their TBA is Tracking By Amazon and that is basically gibberish. Why provide a tracking number that you have to call Amazon to even track... Best Buy, their own delivery truck also didnt have my right address. I just picked the item up from the store. But several packages have disappeared into a black hole with Fedex in my area. Getting the refund is no problem thru Amazon but still. This also happened with Best Buy, again with Fedex. Why are most delivery drivers from all the shippers (USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc) not knocking on doors anymore? And this started well before the pandemic. Last edited: Dec 13, 2021 OP OP Darknight

Member Oct 25, 2017 2,717 I worked in logistics for UPS for several years and, while I never worked for FedEx, their system is essentially the same. To your first point, sending a package in seemingly the wrong direction may seem silly but it's far more efficient to send packages out from a central hub. As to your second, when it seems to be in transit forever, there's so many possible reasons for that. It could be as simple as not receiving a scan somewhere along the line, to it being lost or damaged. Also to your query about scanning, packages are supposed to be scanned a minimum of 3 times at a hub. Once upon entry, once during the sorting process, and once upon departure. If a trailer is not unloaded at a hub, they scan the trailer but in my experience that's fairly rare. Astronut325

lol. yeah, im fine with the fake signature concept because of Covid but the shippers should understand thats whats going on. and the delivery person really shouldn't really be signing for it 24 hours in advance. the convo with walmart literally went like this: them: "it was signed for." me: "by who!?" them: "CCOVID" me: "ok, does that make any sense to you?" anyway, they told me to contact my bank to dispute the charges and i did that. but it hadnt moved off a pending charge so my bank couldnt dispute at that point. if they had cancelled the charges before they showed up today, id have to contact the bank to charge me again because it actually got delivered, i guess? glad it didnt have to get so complicated. The one that went dark is at the destination and has been put on a delivery truck. The one that had constant updates also was updated to have arrived at the destination at 2 am and is scheduled for today but hasn't been updated to say it's on a delivery truck. 16 days later for one, 9 days later for the other. 9 days was a package shipped 30 miles away. I don't know what they do, but every single time something gets about 20 miles from me, sits there for a few days, and then gets routed out to some random place hundreds of miles away, only to end up right back where it was before. Then after doing all that it will finally get on a truck for delivery. If I'm lucky the delivery person will actually show up and if I'm extra lucky they won't just dump it out the back of the trunk in the middle of my driveway. Thank goodness I've got good neighbors. I know this happens a lot to other people, but I think I'm fortunate that the last mile here has usually been pretty reliable. So once it's on the truck, it's usually going to be here. Maybe once in a blue moon it gets delayed by a day, but that's the worst of it. Granted with how bad things are, I can see this being more probable as a problem now, but so far it hasn't been the case. All my issues tend to be related too their backbone network of moving packages around before the last mile.

No, I understand every courier is under significant load due to the holidays and issues with the pandemic. The thing is by comparison, FedEx has handled it worse than the other couriers. There was a news article posted earlier how FedEx's on time delivery rate has dropped drastically compared to UPS for example. So this isn't simply an issue that all couriers have higher volumes right now. FedEx has logistic and backbone network issues that go beyond what other couriers are experiencing. It has also been an issue long before the holiday season started. The holiday season is just making it worse for them.
