qwerty Q I couldn't find any definitive answers to this online... How much fertilizer will I need per acre. I have (am getting) a spreader (for a tractor) to seed and fertilize the lawn if that helps. Someone told me I may need 80lbs, but he wasn't sure. Also how much would however much it is cost? And how often should I be applying it? #1 · Apr 17, 2012 I couldn't find any definitive answers to this online... How much fertilizer will I need per acre. Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Apr 17, 2012 I suggest you contact your closest Cooperative Extension office operated by your state's land grant university. They can provide you with solid information applicable to your area. In general, it's recommended to apply no more than 1 pound of actual nitrogen per 1000 square feet of turf (phosphorous and potassium recommendtions are normally determined by soil test). The amount of fertilizer it takes to supply 1 pound of nitrogen depends on the analysis of the fertilizer used. Just for example, let's say you will use a fertilizer that has an analysis of 20-0-5 (20 % nitrogen, 0 phosphorous, and 5 % potassium). It will take 5 pounds of that fertilizer to yield 1 pound of nitrogen. An acre has 43,560 square feet. At the rate of 5 pounds of 20-0-5 per 1000 square feet, it will take 217.8 of 20-0-5 to cover the acre. How often you apply fertilizer has a lot to do with your appearance and quality goals as well as the availability of moisture to the grass and so on. Cut down on the confusion and contact your Extension office. Good luck. #3 · Apr 18, 2012 It all depends on analysis/concentration. If you're putting down 5-1-2, you'll need LOTS. For normal 24-5-10, with 60%SRN (slow release nitrogen) type stuff, my farm supply store says 3 25kg (60lb) bags per acre. I would recommend 2 per acre, and then re-apply part way through the season. If you are not using SRN, this level of application will burn your grass. Best thing to do is go to the place, ask them, and then based on what they say, buy what you need. #4 · Apr 18, 2012 Two 60 pound bags of 24-5-10 fertilizer per acre will supply 28.8 pounds of nitrogen, 6 pounds of phosphorous, and 12 pounds of potassium per acre. Looking at nitrogen only, that amounts to 0.66 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet. That rate of nitrogen applied to turf with dry foliage will not cause a fertilizer burn of any kind whether it has slow release nitrogen or a highly water soluble nitrogen. That level of nitrogen will result in a positive response (darker green color and a somewhat accelerated vertical shoot growth rate), but the response may not persist as long as the response from a heavier application of the same fertilizer. Again, I suggest you get in in touch with your Cooperative Extension Service office for information regarding turfgrass establishment and maintenance in your area. They're not selling fertilizer, just providing solid information. Good luck. #5 · Apr 20, 2012 Back when I fertilized my lawn myself, I just followed the directions that came with the lawn food. Most bags of fertilizer will tell you what settings to use for a variety of spreaders. #6 · Apr 20, 2012 :Stop: soil analysis is needed to know what soil amendments are needed to make the fertilizer work properly. With-out this you could be just wasting time and $$$ #7 · Apr 21, 2012 what MGM said, i had my soil tested and the report had what the soil was like and what amendments to add and how much, very helpful. and not expensive.
