What Is the Irish Trash Can or Trash Can Drink?

The Irish Trash Can is an extremely potent cocktail that is garnished with a can of Red Bull.It features a mixture of 3 different liquors, 3 different liqueurs and caffeine. Trash can drinks are drinks that literally contain all types of alcohol thrown together, typically in a plastic bin. The Irish Trash Can is a bit more classier and served in a tall glass. And even though it was not invented in Ireland, it’s called “Irish” because once you pour in all the liquors and stir, it becomes bright green.

What Does an Irish Trash Can Taste Like?

Even though this cocktail is made using a very strong mixture of liquors and liqueurs and liquors, the main flavor profile is sweet, fruity with orange and peach notes. It is balanced with the dryness from the triple sec and gin.

What Is Triple Sec? And Blue Curaçao? Is Triple Sec the Same As Cointreau?

Triple sec Cointreau and Blue Curacao are all orange liqueurs but each are unique.

  • Triple sec: A neutral tasting dry orange liqueur infused with orange peels. Triple sec is rarely consumed as is and more commonly used for mixing in cocktails like margaritas or May Tai’s.
  • Cointreau: Cointreau is a higher quality triple sec. It is sweeter and also has a more complex flavor profile. It can be consumed straight on the rocks or mixed in cocktails. We recommend using it in cocktails with fewer ingredients like a Cranberry Sidecar, where the quality and flavor of each ingredient are crucial. Because Cointreau is a type of triple sec, you can double up on the triple sec and opt out on the Cointreau if you do not have any on hand.
  • Blue Curaçao: Blue Curaçao is a bright blue Carribean Antilles orange liqueur that’s sweet in the beginning but has a bitter touch in the end. It is made with the peels of a specific type of bitter oranges called “Laraha”. Do not skip out of the Blue Curaçao, since it is the key component to achieving the green color in the Irish trash can drink.

Step by Step Instructions on How To Make Trash Can

1 — In a tall Collins glass with ice, pour the Blue Curaçao first, letting it settle at the bottom for a colorful base.

2 — Add the gin, vodka, rum, and peach schnapps, and stir throughly.

3 — Open the can of Red Bull and sit it upside on top the glass (like a garnish). Add a couple of straws and enjoy!

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • Depending on how large your glass, a can of Red Bull may be too much, which is way a Collins glass is ideal. You can reserve the rest of it in another glass.
  • Feel free to add more of each liquor and adjust to your liking. Some versions use 1 ounce ratios of each. But we prefer to use only 1/2 ounce of each.
