Autumn spans from September to November, while the winter months are December, January and February.
Based on the meteorological calendar, the first day of spring is March 1.
Weather.com explains the meteorological seasons are determined by temperatures, with the coldest three months of the year in the Northern Hemisphere usually being the winter months of December, January and February.
Similarly the hottest three months of the year are normally the summer months of June, July and August.

When is the astronomical start of spring?
The astronomical start of spring this year is Saturday, March 20, 2021.
Based on the astronomical calendar, spring 2021 will end on Monday, June 21.
The Met Office explains the reasoning behind the astronomical start of spring is based on the position of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

The Met Office said: “Astronomical seasons refer to the position of Earth's orbit in relation to the Sun, considering equinoxes and solstices.
“This is due to the 23.5 degrees of tilt of the Earth's rotational axis concerning its orbit around the Sun.
“Since the seasons vary in length, the start date of a new season can fall on different days each year.”
The spring equinox, also known as the vernal equinox or the March equinox, takes place when the Sun crosses the equator line heading north in the sky.

From this date, spring has officially started in the Northern Hemisphere.
On the date of an equinox, the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of the day and night is nearly equal.
After months of winter, the days start to get longer and the temperatures start to warm following the spring equinox.
However, in the Southern Hemisphere this occurrence marks the start of autumn.
