Youth Sports - A youth soccer team shakes hands at the end of their soccer game. Sports Share January 24, 2025

Sports are a part of our culture and touch nearly everyone’s life. Are you considering getting your child involved in sports? Check out just some of the benefits of youth sports.

  1. Having FUN! ..and that is - by far - the most important thing. Making new friends, running around and playing is just plain fun. If you or your child feel unsure, start by attending a youth sports game to see how the game works and how the players interact. Soon they will be itching to join the fun!
  2. Staying Active Youth sports offer an opportunity to move around, which helps build strength and endurance. In addition to the obvious physical benefits, staying active can help fight depression and anxiety. Developing an active lifestyle early means that there’s a better chance that kids maintain it in the long run.
  3. Being a Good Sport Soccer, basketball, tennis, pickleball and more - competition is part of the game. Children who participate in sports learn how to overcome adversity and how to cope when things don’t go their way. Being a good sport, both in athletics and life, is essential.
  4. Managing Time and Priorities Participating in sports will give your child the opportunity to balance priorities. Over time, your child will learn to prioritize homework assignments around their practice and game schedule. Your child will be learning time-management skills without even realizing they are doing it.
  5. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work Teamwork is an important life skill - and an essential part of team sports. Participation in sports allows children to make lasting friendships, develop communication skills, feel a sense of community and learn to respect their teammates and coaches. Even athletes in individual sports learn to work as a team with their coach and make lasting friendships with others in their sport.

The YMCA offers a variety of Youth Sports Leagues. For those who aren't quite ready to participate in a league, we also offer youth sports classes as part of our Monthly Programs.
