Posted July 19, 2016 If you have it in the heater core you have it in the rest of the system, so it's the whole system that needs a flush. 453747.png waynieRS Enthusiast Posted July 19, 2016

Posted July 19, 2016 If you decide to try it, remember hydochloric acid reacts with both copper and aluminum aggressively. Be prepared for a lot of foaming and crap coming out and I would have a bag of baking soda ready for flushing to neutralize the acid. Mix baking soda in warm water-about 1/2 cup per gallon until dissolved, and I would flush at least 5 gallons through heater core after the acid. Then hook a garden hose to heater core and flush for several more minutes. whitetiger Grand Master Posted July 19, 2016

Posted July 20, 2016 ok guys i will take that as a no then .. i dont want to cause any more problems . so the best way to flush my core throughly would be and is there any other " additives" i can use that are SAFE to do so . not getting same heat out of passenger vents as drivers vents , have checked to see if actuator flaps are getting full travel etc and all good . so im guessing its the core Max Capacity Grand Master Posted July 20, 2016

IMO the core is going to transfer heat, not direct where it goes.

You have some other issue.

What do you need heat this time of year for any way's...Sorry couldn't pass that one up.

I see where your from ;)

It's not an entirely bad idea to flush the system now and then, but tap water is usually sufficient.

As the heat is different on passenger and driver side - usually the air mix valves that are stuck or the servo engines for them. It's not a fun job as it's all under the dashboard - try to avoid footprints in the ceiling when messing around there! :)

Posted July 20, 2016 im in australia guys ... originally a pom so i do understand cold weather... it just annoys me . from what i have seen when i have stripped the centre console down to gain access to heater box is that it is all working.. having been on many other forums and read same posts regards this problem 95% of posts are pointing towards the actual core being blocked on the left hand side (passenger side in oz) ehsnils Grand Master Posted July 20, 2016

Posted July 20, 2016 Well, a flush is simple to do, so no harm, just don't use some strong stuff there. 453747.png GTEASER Grand Master Posted July 20, 2016

Posted July 20, 2016 I changed your thread title to be more descriptive of the topic, so it can possibly assist another member in the future. "Is it safe?" by itself was pretty sketchy and vague. I'm suprised you didn't get any "Use a condom" comments.

2 kids later, pull out hasn't worked well for me.

Does the core flow top line to bottom line? Just asking if there was a direction of flow needed to flush it correctly. I just hooked the hose to top and let it flow out the bottom last I did it.

Posted July 21, 2016 think i will flush it both ways just to see if it can dislodge anything in there . be good to get a mini camera in there and see if there is anything causing the problem ehsnils Grand Master Posted July 21, 2016

Flush both ways. A garden hose would be fine, just make sure the other end is open.

It's a wet job.
