How to Tell If Your Alternator Is Bad? To tell if your alternator is bad you need to perform the headlight test. With the vehicle in park, press on the accelerator while a second person observes the headlights. Flickering or dimming lights is a sign of a bad alternator. Next perform a battery test, where while the engine is running, remove the negative cable from the battery. If the vehicle stalls or dies, the alternator is bad. i google and found out few possibilities on why car can't start~ 1. battery~~ batt is less than 6mths 2. alternator~ will test it by disconnect the negative cable~ 3. starter motor~ if starter motor is spoilt, it won't hv clicking sounds 4. solenoid~ possible fault 5. poor connection~ had disconnected the cables and clean up the contacts 6. poor grounding~ not sure how to check but unlikely fault 7. devices that connected to cigarette jack~ had disconnected as well~ if my car can't start again, i think i can narrow dwn to alternator or solenoid liao~ A

A Mazda 3. The early symptom was the battery light being on after starting the car. Need to drive for about 10 mins then will off. And i just changed my car battery a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday it got worse, the battery light was on for almost my whole journey. WestGuy

Kian Teong Auto. I read a good review about this workshop from another bro in the forum hence i went there. That bro thought he had an alternator problem but they were able to identify it as a electrical problem only. I initially went to Stamford Tyres and they could not diagnose any problem zzz J

As for the Toyota rattling's sound , it is always the alternator's bearings which can be replaced at 80-100k mileage for a small sum. A lot of workshops that specialize in car aircon can replace or recon your alternator.
